C230 motherboard.

So my friend is looking to upgrade from his old cpu. (i can't remember which one) but he has a c230 chipset. Will a i5 9600k work on that mobo?

If I'm not mistaken, that chipset supports Xeons.

 

Need a board part number though. Then we can have a definitive list from the manufacturer's website....

No it will only run i7 7700k max.

you can also run Xeon 1285 v6 with it.

C230 isn't a specific chipset. It includes C232, C236, CM236 and CM238.

CM are for mobile chips.

 

They are all Skylake and Kaby Lake chipsets, which means only Intel Core and Xeons of the 6th and 7th generation work.

It can use 6th and 7th gen Core and E3 v5 and v6 Xeons, in other words max out at 4 cores only.
