Is there any reason for a motherboard to support Core 2 Quad non-S but not the S version?

I want to upgrade an old HP dc5800. I almost ordered a Core 2 Quad Q9400. Realized it may be too much for the PSU. then I saw there is an "S" version for the Core 2 Quads which consumes less power (65w vs 95w). if the manual says that it can support a Q9400, is there a reason for it not to support the Q9400S? maybe BIOS thing? What do you think?

It can be hit and miss as like you said, it depends what support they included in the BIOS and sometimes CPUs they don't officially support are actually still in there, sometimes they aren't.

The S came out Q1 2009 whereas the normal edition came out Q3 2008, so that may also be a clue.  Is the BIOS newer than Q1 2009?

Googling that HP model though, I see some results for units that DO have Core 2 Quads in them so maybe the PSU will be fine?  Although its always a risk as these PSUs will be getting on a bit so more likely to fail in general.

I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't support the 95w part. When you are upgrading those old office PCs they typically have a custom mobo and BIOS from the OEM. They often leave out support for even CPUs that are listed as supported.

Then I think I'll get a 20$ Core 2 Quad Q8400S (65w) which is almost the same as the Q9400 and check it... if not I'll just make a decoration from it or sell it back on eBay

From my experience, the 775-era BIOSes are surprisingly un-picky. I've put C2Qs in C2D systems without any issues. Heck, you can put 771 Xeons in most 3x/4x boards (with physical tweaks) and they'll run just fine.

sounds good! going to order one. By the way is there any reason to get the Q9400S over the Q8400S? Just they sell the Q9400S for 45$ and the Q8400S for 20$

You have to have the xeon microcode modded into the BIOS as well for this to work. You can get a modded BIOS for most boards for a dollar or two on ebay though. At least that is what I had to do to get my Gigabyte board to run an E5450.

No, you don't (at least not for every board). The Gigabyte P45 motherboard I had didn't need any BIOS changes.

My Gigabyte EP45 did. Also the likely hood of an OEM desktop board just supporting 771 is extremely small.

I updated to the latest bios available on this board. It's from 2009 and bios is from 2015 . I guess they added the xeon support there
