If you try to start the Windows Update, Cryptographic Services and BITS service, what errors do you get?

If they won't start, you can try setting them to automatic and restart the system.

If it still doesn't work, open an elevated command prompt and type:

sfc /scannow

Allow it to run and validate, then reboot and try Windows Update again.

Run the below in an elevated CMD and restart, then see if WIndows Update will start and stay running:

SC config wuauserv start= auto
SC config bits start= auto
SC config cryptsvc start= auto
SC config trustedinstaller start= auto

If no luck after that, you can try resetting WU Components and reboot, then try again:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv

I have done all of the above. Windows update will not stay running and I am still stuck on "One of the update services is not running properly, but you can try to run a troubleshooter to fix the problem. Go to Start button > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot, and then select Windows Update."

Could you post screenshots of the general and logon tab on the properties of the WIndows Update service?

Windows Update serivce is disabled, which is a problem.

Click on the drop down and select auto or manual. If it won't let you set it, click on the dependencies tab and check if any of those services are disabled. If so, set them to manual or auto.

Also set Update Orchestrator Service to Automatic (Delayed Start) and Windows Update Medic Service to manual.

If it still will not start, you can try using DISM to check for corruption and repair. If no luck after that, a system repair using the media creation tool may be needed, or you can try upgrading to a newer version if you're not on the latest already.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

EDIT: You can also try downloading the latest Servicing Stack and Cumulative update for you version of Windows from the update catalogue and install them manually by running the .msu files it downloads. It may repair Windows update after installing or at least allow you to update manually.

Which service is the access denied for? Windows Update?

If so, you can try resetting the service through the registry. I'd advise exporting the registry first before making any changes. I also cannot vouch for the reg file myself, but you can read about it here if you want:https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/57567-restore-default-services-windows-10-a.html

Reboot after running it.

I'd try the DISM command I posted above and try installing updates manually. If still no luck with those, a repair or upgrade. If still no luck, the only thing left to suggest would be a complete reinstall.

That link has files to reset the service via the registry, just download the one for WIndows update.

Is the Medic service disabled? I just tested on mine and I can't change the startup type on mine either, but it's already set to manual. Did Windows Update allow you to set it to anything other than disabled?

Did you restart the system and try to start it?

I'm going to sleep now so won't be able to reply. I've suggested everything I can, so I'd run through everything I've suggested that you haven't run yet and perform a repair or reinstall if all fails, unless someone wants to pick up troubleshooting.

I have restarted the computer and tried again yes. but to no avail. Not working.

I guess i'll try to repair then since i'm hoping to not reinstall everything. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it, sleep well.

how come everything is disabled... windows usually does not allow users to disable these update related things... I'm wondering...

Did you download any programs that interfere with windows update or trusted installer perhaps?

if not did you run some virus scans?

I'd suggest malwarebytes, adw, and something like Bitdefender - at this point I wouldn't trust windows defender anymore tbh...

I have run malwarebytes and then Bitdefender as per your request. So far nothing.

Gonna run some more tests then do a fresh install of windows if nothing else fixes it.
