What is it with emoji's slowing my connection down?

馃聽Every time I try and post an emoji,聽literally my entire internet connection grinds to a halt. It pretty much doesn't matter what website it is, but its mainly Linus and YouTube doing it. What gives here? Does this happen to anyone else? Does this have to do with flash? HTML? Is something out of date? Its not a big problem of course, I'm just curious. Maybe I can prevent bigger issues from occurring down the road.
