350W on gtx 1060 and a 4 to 6 pin adapter. Or new psu for RX 570

Akjee1

Hello everyone, I've a couple of questions, putting me in quite a predicament between choosing what to do. My first question is, for those who are willing to help out a noobie in the PC building aspect of course, would a 350W be sufficient for a gtx 1060? And on top of those 350W it has only a 4 pin connector, meaning I'll have to use an adapter to 6 pins. If that would work, I guess what I'm gonna do is get an adapter and a gtx 1060 6gb. Or purchase a new (not corsair unfortunately or some quality brand) but a cheap, 500W PSU worth 27$ and a RX 570 4gb GPU. The RX 570 is cheaper by a considerable amount, allowing me to get a new PSU for the price difference between the two cards. Or I could get a used corsair vs450. But would 450W be enough for RX 570? What do you guys think i should do?

Here is my current PSU: https://bulk.fsp-europe.com/fsp350-60apn-80-eol It's also rated Bronze.

Here is the 500W PSU i have in mind for the RX 570: https://tiny-reviews.com/reviews/357-review-on-power-supply-deepcool-explorer-de500-500w

A huge thanks in advance!

Sounds like it doesnt have a PCIe cable at all, and its a 4 pin EPS (cpu power) cable on the 350w.  Even I have never tried or even googled if you can run a GPU power off of it lol.  Or its a 4 pin proprietary pinout as it sounds like an OEM PSU.

That Deepcool PSU should support the requirements no problem.

Wether it is 4, 6, 8 or 2x4 pins doesn't change a single thing in regards to wether it could run or not. One row is ground only and one row is Vcc only. By adding more pins (in combination with more cables) you will increase the maximum power limit of that cable. A 1060 does not pull much power.

HOWEVER are you REALLY sure that this is a 4-pin PCIe connector and NOT another 4 pin EPS connector (aka CPU power connector)? They are not fully interchangable but you can plug one if it into the other one frying your hardware because power and ground pins are the other way around.

Do make very sure you do not mix them up!

The PSU you've linked does not seem to have a 4-pin PCIe connector, only 6+2 and 6 pin. You're about to make an expensive mistake if you have a 4-pin connector in your hand now.

Soo...that 4-pin connector you are talking about is for the CPU, NOT for a Graphics Card.

It even says in the specification page you linked to.

It has NO proper 6-pin or 8-pin connection(s) for Graphics Cards -- you need to replace that 350W PSU.

Adapters are a terrible idea.  Two Molex into one 6-pin = problems.  Each Molex only has one 20g wire.  A 6-pin PCIe has three 18g wires (minimum.  Some PSUs use 16g).  Do the math.

The fact that it's rated Bronze means nothing.

You didn't notice that that PSU isn't actually a 500W, right?  It's a 350W.  Says so right on the box.  On top of that, it's just a terrible PSU.  That PSU could only do 500W if it was operating at 0°C for very short periods of time.

If you don't have the money to buy a PSU that's not going to kill all of your hardware in a year's time, don't buy a new graphics card.

Oh wow...I didn't even notice that (to be fair, I didn't even look at the PSU he linked)

Has '500' in the model number, but Rated Power = 350W.

Yup.  And as usual, no accountability for the shenanigans.

Oh thanks for pointing out it was actually 350W JohnnyGURU... Thanks for replying everyone, so it looks like I'll have to purchase a new PSU. What I'm gonna do is purchase a used Corsair VS450 450W which is perfect for an RX 570 I guess. What is your opinion on that PSU?

Not a very good choice.
