It's now AMD vs Apple - more Ryzen 5000U-series benchmarks found


More benchmarks for the upcoming AMD laptops have been found, one is identified as a XiaoMi gaming laptop, while the other seems to be a testbench. Compared to the previous generation it seems to be around 20-40% faster.


Apparently, the laptop-grade Ryzen 5000U APU family will include rebranded Ryzen 4000 APUs with Zen2 cores codenamed Lucienne combined with new Zen3-based models codenamed Cezanne. For example, the Ryzen 5 5500U and Ryzen 7 5700U we have seen in previous leaks are part of the Lucienne refreshes. However, today we get to see how the Zen3-based Cezanne models measure up via a new Geekbench leak for the Ryzen 7 5800U model.


According to the Geekbench database entry, the upcoming Ryzen 7 5800U APU features 8 cores / 16-threads clocked at 1.9 GHz by default (2.0 GHz might be the correct speed), which can boost to a maximum frequency of 4.44 GHz. L3 memory cache is set to 16 MB, while the iGPU is clocked at 2.0 GHz, and cTDP should be between 10-25 W. Compared to the Ryzen 7 5700U clocked at 1.8 GHz default / 4.3 GHz boost and with a 1.9 GHz iGPU, we are seeing only 100 MHz uptick across the board, so we should not really expect significant improvements. This is clearly demonstrated by the multi-core scores that are only 2.6% higher, yet, despite the DDR4 RAM clocked at only 2666 MHz, the single-core results are surprisingly 20% higher, which can be corroborated with the great single-core improvements we already see on the Zen3-based desktop versions.

The 5500U however is not as significant.


Unsurprisingly, the single-core score of the Ryzen 5 5500U is within a margin of error of the Ryzen 5 4500U. We have not reviewed a device with a Ryzen 5 4600U, but enabling SMT on the Ryzen 5 5500U appears to give it a 30% lead over the Ryzen 5 4500U in the multi-core portion of Geekbench 5. However, the Ryzen 5 5500U does not stand up well against the Core i5-1135G7. Its single-core is around 20% down on what the Core i5-1135G7 has averaged in our tests, while the additional two cores and four threads only add 12% in performance. The Ryzen 5 5600U will be a more impressive APU though, as AMD is expected to have based it on Zen 3 (Cezanne) cores. The Ryzen 3 5400U and Ryzen 7 5800U are thought to be using AMD's upcoming Zen 3 cores, too. The Ryzen 5000 series is expected to debut at CES 2021 in January.

Thoughts: Certainly a fierce chip that is pushing the efficiency of TSMC's 7nm process, but with Apple's M1 already in the market whos single thread/multi thread performance of ~1720/7550 seems to outmatch the U models entirely. I will have to wait for the benchmarks to see if 5nm and 7nm is really that big.

Apple will most likely also have a higher end M1X* chip out in maybe 6 months from now and that should be even much more impressive than the M1. Edit: The M1X will be a higher TDP chip so it will not really be competing with the 5800U, but as said, the M1 seems to be beating the 5800U either way.

I personally think the dude who puts a zen2 core in something and calls it a 5xxx needs to be slapped. 4xxxx is good. If it’s more advanced or has extra to use. Add a 50 on the end.  There’s room.  AMD JUST FIXED that stupidity problem with the G processors though. Putting it right back again after going to 5 not 4 is pure asinine behavior.

It's more like AMD and Apple are doing their own thing. Intel is irrelevant but that doesn't mean Apple and AMD are competing...bc they aren't really.

Perhaps semi irrelevant for now.  They either have to adjust or come out with some segment leading stuff. Either would work.  The impression I’m getting is they’re frantically avoiding adjustment and hoping for a hardware miracle.  They’ve had 3 failed “miracles” in a row though.  Adjustment is something the should have done months ago.  Even if they do get a hardware miracle, an adjustment wouldn’t damage them massively the way not getting a miracle and not adjusting would.  There’s still a bit of time.  Or might be.  Intel is part of the US market.  The US market is shaky atm.  Intel still makes chips that are saleable.  Just not at the prices they want to charge for em.
