Entry level DSLR vs iPhone 11, XS, Samsung S20, and other flagship smartphones for image quality

Hi everyone

 

I want to take photos of family occasions like birthdays, marriages etc. I have an iPhone XS, but I’m not sure whether the quality is better or worse than DSLRs, particularly the one I am considering a Canon EOS 1500D ($550 Australian dollars). Is this better than my iPhone XS camera? If not, which DSLRs should I consider that will achieve better quality than smartphones? If these DSLRs could take a higher quality pictures, for how long will they stay ahead of smartphone cameras? Are mirrorless cameras better or worse than DSLRs in terms of image quality?

It depends on what kind of shot you're trying to get, what kind of lighting conditions its in, what lense you have on the Canon, and several other factors that make it hard to pick one overall winner.

A smartphone is designed to do a lot of things and because of this you have to make compromises in all areas. A DSLR has one job and it was made to take pictures. Smartphones have come a long ways but they are still no where near what a proper DSLR can do. I really can't speak for intro cameras as I don't have experience in that field. But with a DSLR you will get a lot more options. You'll be able to shoot RAW, you technically can on smartphones but need a 3rd party app for iPhones, you can swap lenses, add things like polarizes and ND filters, and a whole lot more your smartphone can't do. If you are comparing smartphones to highend DSLRs like the 1D or the a7R, smartphones will always be behind. Mirror vs mirrorless doesn't change the image quality or fidelity but more so the work flow and the options you have for lenses. Mirrorless is generally what the market is moving towards but is does have drawbacks compared to mirrored but that's for a different discussion.

A smartphone is designed to do a lot of things and because of this you have to make compromises in all areas. A DSLR has one job and it was made to take pictures. Smartphones have come a long ways but they are still no where near what a proper DSLR can do. I really can't speak for intro cameras as I don't have experience in that field. But with a DSLR you will get a lot more options. You'll be able to shoot RAW, you technically can on smartphones but need a 3rd party app for iPhones, you can swap lenses, add things like polarizes and ND filters, and a whole lot more your smartphone can't do. If you are comparing smartphones to highend DSLRs like the 1D or the a7R, smartphones will always be behind. Mirror vs mirrorless doesn't change the image quality or fidelity but more so the work flow and the options you have for lenses. Mirrorless is generally what the market is moving towards but is does have drawbacks compared to mirrored but that's for a different discussion.

The simple thing is also that a dslr just can capture more light as it's physically bigger. It doesn't need to rely on software to make the image good it's basically just good from the get go (well depends on the shot). Another big advantage is that you can adjust a camera to your liking and needs with lenses, mounts,... a phone is well just that a phone and that's it you can't really do much else to it to get a whole range of different pictures, zoom,... sure some aftermarket stuff exists but it's pretty janky at best.

Yes real cameras are a lot better, however you’ll either have to leave it on auto or learn how to adjust the settings to get what you want. Also you’ll need different lens’ for different things which can get expensive. A kit lens should do you fine vs a smartphone in comparison.

I have a bottom end mirrorless and it destroys my iPhone 11 Pro. Mirrorless cameras aren’t worse but don’t have an optical viewfinder, aren’t as big and are quieter than DSLRs. Autofocus on entry DSLRs is also better than it is on entry mirrorless systems. 
 

Better glass and larger, better sensors are things smartphones will never overcome.

on a canon DSLR you get decent AF through the viewfinder but much better in live view. (at least in more current ones. older bodys like 60D are slow in live but faster in viewfinder)

do you know photography and are you a good photographer ?  if you aren't , stick to using a phone.

yeah what would i know about cameras or cinematography compared to you tech people.  i've only done this work for nearly 20 years, won a few awards, worked in over a dozen different countries and a few multi million dollar projects

I’ve been using a camera since the early 2000s. Everyone says I take great photos. iPhone cameras just aren’t doing it for me anymore. There’s storage issues all the time and what percentage of photos end up getting deleted. With a camera and SD card you can take thousands of photos and it won’t complain about storage. I would like to know whether it is worth buying a Canon EOS 1500D or sticking with iPhone photos – it doesn’t feel very professional holding a phone up to take photos. Feels very impersonal like I’m taking a selfie. I know some modes like Macro etc. until I get a DSLR or mirrorless I will be stuck with the very basic features of an iPhone camera. Then go for a entry level Camera, even if you aren't a good Photographer, you can still learn with your camera.

There are things, which are hard to learn with a phone, due to physical limitations.

I've had great experiences with the Canon M series. They are compact enough, to just take them with you everywhere, they deliver photos roughly as good as a like 10 year old 7D, and aren't that expensive.

My bottom tier mirrorless takes better photos than my iPhone. Also never heard space being an issue with phone photos. They don't shoot RAW so i have like 6000 photos on my phone and they're only taking up 35GB

taking photos is more than just aiming and clicking shutter button on the camera or on the phone.  using a phone for photography can be good in the right conditons.  but a good camera will give you more leeway even if the conditions are not ideal.  the thing with investing in a good camera is also investing in a set of lenses that are necessary

canon M is that last platform I'd buy into .EF-m has no upgrades and very few decent lenses on it.

Sony A6x00 or Fuji is my recommendation.

EF-M to EF has a native adapter from Canon.
And you know how good some of their EF glass is.
So you get the benefit of the small Formfactor for "normal" everyday Photography, and the possibility to buy EF Lenses, if you want something better.
And since the Sensor in those Cameras is a standart APS-C Sensor, you don't have any problem with just a physical converter. Yes you won't be able to get the best EF-M glass, but that is not the point of those cameras.

an XT-200 for 500$ with a kit lens is dam hard to beat.

only thing canon has got is like refurbished SL3 the T5-T8

if you step up to 700-900$ then you start to get other bodies like m50mk2 but at that range the XT-30 or the XT-200 with some better lenses is an option
