Gsync monitor should I consider AMD as a option.

I currently have a gsync chipped gsync monitor the PG278Q solid monitor. Its always kept me with team green because gsync is a nice feature along with the 1440p and 144hz I get with the display. However given the performance of the 6800xt and "maybe" the stronger availability to lose the feature for an AMD or wait till Evga calls my name for the 3080. Really curious what the community would think. Thanks.

Short answer is no, freesysnc won't work on that monitor.

Depends on how much you use / need G-Sync.

6800 XT is the better performing card, but you won't lose out too much with an RTX 3070 either.

True I should add some context I have a i9 9900k and a gtx 980 so I'm weighing my options on the gpu upgrade

I'm on the list for both the 70 and 80 with evga and would do a step up with the 70 if I got that first. I use gsync with everything nice to not have to worry about tearing and turning vsync off.

I'm fairly certain that's not true for older G-Sync monitors.

You are correct. My monitor has no freesync support just gsync. The advantage is that since it's chipped I can use a 900 series card where as I can't on a gsync compatible monitor.

Yes, the ones with the GSYNC CHIPS correct.

 

Some of the newer ones support both depending on what they are...

 

They are really FREE-SYNC monitors, but GSYNC can work with them.

The real question is, what are your current specs?  Both the RTX 3080 and RX 6800xt are relatively bad values.  I wouldn't recommend either of them. The performance doesn't scale with the price.

I look at it from this perspective buying the more expensive item to push it further out. I don't want a 2080ti which is last gen in the 3070/6800 but I want something higher end now and good value later.

Its about stopping tearing and having a smoother frame experience. I'll put in the old linus tech tips vid for my monitor.

Okay, you've got a GTX 980.  You can easily get a more sensible upgrade without breaking the bank.  I just bought a GTX 1080 Ti for $300, doubling my performance from a 980 Ti (which I sold for $220).  If you want something newer, a 2070 Super would be great.  Alternatively, you could wait for the RTX 3060.  You definitely should get an upgrade,

 

The higher end cards are originally sold super inflated prices relative to their worth. If you're buying them, it's just so you can brag that you aren't good with money.

Oh, well that explains it.  Variable refresh rate lets you get smooth frame times at rates besides 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 of your max refresh rate.  That means without it on a 144hz monitor, you can only get a smooth video at 36fps, 48fps, 72fps, and 144fps.  Those are big gaps.

Wow, Im on the same boat, 980 Strix and the same display, Asus swift pg278q. I have the same question too, but i think im going to buy the 3080 (the ti if they make it, because nowdays 3080 in spain are ut of stock yet)

Well, at least with my 5700XT, I don't get screen tearing even with freesync disabled, no matter the framerate. (yes, with vsync disabled as well globally) No clue why either, but it seems pretty common for the 5700XT. Also, my screen has backlight flicker with freesync on, so it's very perceptibly better with it off. (fewer migraines)

That's likely Windows 10 forcing triple buffering (which it does on any program in windowed or in borderless mode), or it could just be a games that don't tear much.

I have a Niro+ RX6800 in my rig, hooked up to a 3840x1080 Freesync 2 monitor that does 144Hz. I play a variety of games, but most recently, Serious Sam 4, UT3 and Metro Exodus (both in DX11, and DX12 with ray tracing), and regardless of framerates, whether in the 100's, or about 60+ and higher (Metro Exodus with ray tracing), I don't see any tearing or stuttering, really smooth actually.
