Got a RX 6800 over a 3070. Did I screw up?

Deadpool2onBlu-Ray

Had the opportunity to get a Tuf OC RTX 3080 for 749+tax, Tuf RTX 3070 OC for 539+tax, or a MSI RX 6800 for 610+tax. Went with the 6800. Didn’t have budget for 3080 and I wanted more vram. My local microcenter was insane this morning. They had all 3 available. Did I eff up? I have until Jan 15 to return/swap it. The 6700xts have been hard to find anywhere

I don't think so. The 6800 is still a great card, that should last you many years too come.

The 6800 is better than 3070 in most games by quite a bit and is not that far off from a 3080. So I don't think you screwed up at all.

Unless you care about ray tracing too much, in which case the NVIDIA cards would perform better.

I was just surprised I was the ONLY one in like getting one. There was 60 people in line and everyone else got 3080 mostly and some 3070/zen 3. It’s like they knew something I didn’t or something I felt stupid

You didn't screw up, but did you not understand the performance level of the 6800 before you bought it?

No I did. I just didn’t quite realize how close to the 3070 it was

I mean, if you're after absolute ray tracing performance, then the RX 6800 isn't going to deliver the performance you probably want. Otherwise, the RX 6800 is a great card.

Just overclock it and you will basically have a 3080 less RT/6800 XT. Only reason to have gotten the 3070 was for RT the fancy garbage called DLSS or the few tools that actually matter that can be replaced via OBS.

3070 for RT only

6800 for poor mans 6800 XT or 3080 (no RT, less a few titles), or a great non RT card to out preform the 3070 esp when on sale. Still yet to be seen if it can be flashed with XT FW.

3080 for RT

6800 XT a competitor for 3080 or poor mans 3090 less RT similarly to the 6800 is to the 3080/6800 XT.

3090

6900 XT TBD

When I posted that when I said on sale I was referring to when stock normalizes in a few months. It is still a great card that defeats the 3070 in most cases.
