Opinions of two portable SSD drives needee

Hi,

I put a post up the other day and the advice I was given was very helpful but I have since discovered a new portable SSD which has peaked my interest and was wondering if I could get some advice before I purchase.

I was going to purchase the 1TB Samsung T7 touch to work from. I would be using this for editing, music production and 3D modelling (occasionally) as I am doing mechanical engineering at Uni. I was browsing the internet last night and seen a drive called the Crucial X8 which claims to be the same speed but costs less (design doesn't look as good in my opinion but it's an SSD it doesn't really matter).

Could anyone recommend which of these two drives are the better option as a drive to work directly from? I would even be open to an alternative if someone knows of a really good drive which would beat these two.

Samsung T7 Touch:

Thanks in advance

the samsung is TLC (triple-level cell) nand, the crucial is QLC (quad-layer cell) nand. If you need more info to understand here's an article about tlc, qlc is just one step further https://www.anandtech.com/show/5067/understanding-tlc-nand

I have been using this ssd for a year now and have had no issues. Since I move it frequently from my laptop to desktop I have dropped it a few times and it still works fine. It is also easy to pocket or carry in my backpack if I wanted to move around some storage with me. Only thing is the cable it comes with is pitifully short, around 5 inches. It also is a bit more pricy than the listed drives, but this is all the knowledge I have on portable ssd stuff

So would you recommend the crucial then if QLC is a step ahead?

I'll have a look into that drive too. Thanks for the suggestion.

well, the tendency is that more layers per cell=worse. They do a better job explaining in the article I linked than I feel capable of atm

Ah right okay so QLC is a drawback. I'll have another read over the article. Thanks!
