i5-10400 VS. i7-9700k

I was originally planning on getting the i5 for a sub $900 gaming build but the i7 has come down enough that I can budget for it. However, the i7 is a generation behind and has 8/8 core and threads vs the i5's 6/12. I have a feeling the i7 will be better but wanted to make sure I am not messing something up. Help would be appreciated

The i5-10400 is worse for gaming than the ryzen 5 3600 unless combined with a Z490 motherboard and some DDR4 3200. The i7, on the other hand, is faster.

The generational leap was non-existent so the clock speed wins out here, and 2 physical cores vs 6 virtual cores isn't a very big difference at all.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

200$ for 9700k would be decent, but you need a decent cooler and a decent motherboard for it. that is why AMD is usually cheaper even if the cpus are mroe expensive.

That is what I am working on figuring out, I think I have a decent Z390 motherboard but I don't know about cooling... I won't be overclocking
