How much activity is normal on C: at idle?

kojeek

Had mircosoft teams and chrome crash on me and refuse to open again,  I reboot, Windows runs a checkdisk and finds and repairs errors.  I uninstall and reinstall teams and chrome to get back to work.  Sleep started acting weird and ran another check disk and found more errors to repair.    Been running ok since, but i feel like my NVME drive has been unusually active,  I could have sworn it sat at 0kbps read write while at idle, but now its going all the time.   Happens even when boot into safe mode.  This is a video with all background software turned off except HWinfo.   might reinstall windows?

Win 10 64 bit

asrock b450m pro4, ryzen 3600,  16gb 3200mhz, zotac 2080, 2tb nvme pci gen3,  650watt gold psu

yeah at idle its not meant to be doing anything... maybe leaving it running at "idle" overnight might help things settle down a bit :)

If thats an option, yes.

However, i watched your video and see nothing of concern. What are you seeing thats concerning?

It seemed to me the CPU was only using 1 to 3%, which is totally normal at idle.

Remember, even though its idle, its still got background work to do, windows will specifically wait until its idle to do things.

And it still has to render what little is on the screen.
Idle is never going to be 0%, on the CPU.

In regards to disk activity, it looked normal to me. Its only using a few kb and watching the items pop up, i dont see anything concerning their either.

If you watch the list of things you can see whats doing it.

I see adobe popping up a few times, looks like its doing something. Possibly checking in with home looking for updates or who knows. But seems normal for no more data than its actually using.

And i see a number of log files being updated. All normal.

I understand your suspicions due to the crash and bad files.

Shit happens sometimes, it might be a fluke.

But on the other hand who likes to just wait and see right?

It might be worth downloading a diagnostic from the drive manufacturer to test for issues.

And again, if you are comfortable with it, reinstalling windows is a good option if its not to painful for you.

But might also be over kill in this case.

You might just need to stop items from starting up with windows.

To do that, go into task manager and clear items out of the startup tab that you dont need to start on boot.

Like adobe, if your not using it, kill the start up item. When you start the app, it will work fine and phone home to check for updates or do what it needs to do then.

On the other hand though, it did see all normal to me.

Maybe i missed something though which is why i asked what you are seeing thats concerning, other than its not at 0%?
