My thoughts

Hi guys !!  ( this is not Austin ;) ), just saw on the verge that youtube will start  pushing ads in channels who did not meet the requirements for monetization. Let me give you guys some context. I have a Veterinary channel that was never intended for monetization, it is a very small channel with a dedicated base of viewers, it highlights surgery techniques, some news about our vet hospital. It makes me not very confortable knowing that youtube can start running ads, my viewers might thinks i´m making a buck out of it, when in fact youtube is getting money out of my work. What do you guys feel about this tech new ?

Just make it clear that you dont get anything out of it? Tbh it doesnt sound so bad knowing that hosting on YT is free even though there's a cost of running those servers. I do worry about how many ads they'll add in, 5mins per ad is so bad I might as well watch TV for example.

The wording sounds like they're telling everyone that they can run ads, not that they will. It seems unlikely to me they'll suddenly slap ads on every video that the creator can't monetize, or isn't monetized by a claim or some garbage like that, but YouTube is a business so I don't think I'll exactly blame them if they do

Remember how every "free image hosting" site inevitably became more and more overcrowded with ads?

Yeah, sooner or later Google is going to decide it has already spent enough money in preventing the appearance of other video hosting sites and it's time to reap the profits, no exceptions.

My thoughts

While I can understand Youtube wanting to make more money, just like any business wants to. I hope they at least give creators the option to disable them on memorial videos, serious subject matters, and other videos in which ads would be frowned upon. I don't think they will however, as even TV networks do such a thing with regular content.

even more ads? youtube interrupts video's every 5 to 10 minutes to play ads in my experience, which is super annoying. i'm a big believer in supporting creators, so i don't enable adblock on it, but it's getting ever more tempting. having your video randomly interrupted for an ad every 5 or 10 minutes when you watch a lot of long content (30 minutes or longer) like me, it gets super annoying.

you get 2 force 6 second unskippable ads at the beginning and one ever 3 to 5 minutes. that's what i mostly get everywhere except LTT videos

that's plenty imo. like, it's at the limit of my patience already as it is. even more ads would be incredibly annoying.

I'm curious to what they will say is ad-friendly safe for non-partners compared to what a partner would post and be deemed not ad-friendly. I have a hunch they'll show ads on whatever yet continue to bully creators

If you people think ads are annoying, you haven't seen how persistently annoying Youtube is if you're watching it without being logged in. Haven't been using anything Google for years now and because Youtube has absolute and total monopoly, I'm forced to use it. But I don't need or want to be logged in. And it'll relentlessly bitch about cookies and then about logging in and if you block this nonsense it'll start and stop every video, making viewing experience such incredible chore, especially on lower end devices that take relatively long to load the damn videos. Google, stop being so obnoxiously annoying. Damn. How many times do we have to say NO means NO eh?

I'm just surprised it took them this long.

Hosting videos take a lot of money, putting ads on videos that are not monetized makes a shit ton of sense on a business standpoint. 

Thus far, they are at least blockable with ublock. Unlike with Twitch, which has unskippable ads now.

I have to say, I have not experienced this at all on Android, using the Vivaldi browser to access Youtube (not logged in by default, unlike with Chrome).
I just click a video, watch it all, click the next video, watch it all... search for videos, go on various channels... never once got interrupted to ask me to log in or anything of the sort, unless I press the Sign Up button up top or the Library page. Which you shouldn't be pressing anyway.

I actually find AdGuard to be much better. Easier to set that incredibly clunky uBlock with really stupid default list selection which I don't like at all. Plus, AdGuard has Stealth Mode which features few extra privacy features. I didn't like AdGuard before, but it's actually really nice.
