This a good trio? 5600X

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor  (~$420.00 CAD)
Motherboard: MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($234.99 @ Amazon Canada)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory (CL16-19-19-39)  ($209.99 @ Amazon Canada)

I kinda wanted to go with a X570 board just because they're shinier, but there seems to be a lack of mid range options that include a bios flashing feature, and I don't need wifi so the tomahawk seem like a good fit.

thoughts?

I guess I should mention my aim is primarily gaming, but might include software development in the future

I don't know why I'm set on the asus tuf x570 plus as the motherboard to pair with my maybe future 5600x or 5800x ... Does the B550 tomahawk have better feature and vrm than the asus tuf ?

Besides that it seems like a good combo.  I just haven't seen any video about the ram frequecy sweetspot for the 5600x yet so I'm waiting for that too.

I9 10850K

EVGA RTX 3080 TI FTW3 ULTRA

32 Gb Crucial Balistix ddr4 3600mHz 16-18-18-38

MSI Z490 Tomahawk

I had the TUF plus down at first, but it doesn't have the bios flashback feature so probably won't work with the new ryzens unless you have an older am4 chip to boot and flash the bios with.

The TUF-Pro has that, but only comes in a Wifi version... as far as the VRM goes the Tomahawk is rated S tier on the list here, while the TUFs are one lower in A tier.  Not sure it would make any difference really depending on if/how much OC you were planning on...

I was planning to get a 3100 while waiting for the 5600x or 5800x to be in stock so the bios update is not an issue.  I did make the choice of that board after the reviews I watched from buildzoid and gamers nexus, but those reviews are dating from before the release of the b550 boards.  I was not really aware of the motherboard tier list so thanx for the info.

A couple things stand out. Theres evidence that zen 3 performs a lot better with 8gbx4 memory than 16gbx2. Also id go for 3600mhz with tighter timings, say 16-16-16-36 if it doesnt blow up your budget too badly. Gamers Nexus did a video on it.

Memory matters for Ryzen.

I saw that vid too, I think the issue was more about 2x8G vs 4x8GB, and 2x16 was just as good or better than 4x8, though they said they were going to do a followup IIRC.

As for the Ram speeds I'm having a hard time finding much (in canada  at least) that isn't even slower than that one, or way more expensive. Not sure I'm going to notice a huge difference between them, certainly not $100 or more's worth of difference. But since I'm not buying anything until I get the CPU anyways, I have time to wait for more detailed reviews and videos to come out...

16-16-16-36 is likely to be samsung B-die while that 16-19-19-39 is almost guaranteed to be Micron E.

https://www.newegg.ca/g-skill-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232195

Cheapest 16-16-16-36 I could find on newegg CA.

Edit: Looks like its only CA$ 131 on ebay from newegg?

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-V-Series-16GB-2-x-8GB-288-Pin-DDR4-SDRAM-DDR4-3600-PC4-28800/291653378427?hash=item43e7e5617b:g:gyIAAOSwh~1dAMxc

16-16-16-36 is usually some primo B-die usually capable of somewhere between 3666-3800 CL14 when OC'd  (And much higher if you go to CAS 16)

That Micron E can go pretty high, but with much looser timings.

I have a 5600X and B550 Tomahawk.  I use TridentZ RGB 3600 B-die.  Currently working on making 3800 CL14 stable.

Both the TUF and the Tomahawk will have VRMs more than adequate of driving a 5600X fully.

The tier list on here is just for VRM cooling.  Which really becomes irrelevant with a 65 watt TDP CPU.  If you're daily driving 150-200 watts on a 65 watt chip on any quality silicon or MB, its gonna degrade in a matter of days or hours if it posts at all.

Good comparison doc there^

I can't confirm if the TUF B550 boards have a T-Topology or Daisy Chain RAM layout but I think its daisy chained from glancing at images of the boards.  Which is MUCH better for 4 Stick RAM OCing.  B550 tomahawk is daisy chain layout.

So for ram OC, cpu OC and vrm cooling the b550 tomahawk would be better than the x570 Asus tuf if I understand it correctly.  I know it's way overkill for the 5600x but I want to have the option to put a 5950x on there if I ever need to without having to worry if the hardware will be able to take it or not.  I won't buy something like the godlike cause of budget and I don't plan to go exotic cooling and become hardcore overclocker anyway.   The goal is to find the best bang for the buck that can support 5950x with some kind of medium OC ... I don't upgrade every two or three years so I want it to last a long time with the workload I have/might have in the future.
