Sleep or full shut down

Tommy.r

Just curious, anyone shut down their computer when not using it? Or do you guys just put it to sleep?

I usually put my modern computers to sleep, unless I need to install updates; older ones got all the way off!

I shut down my computer when I go to sleep. When I go shopping or doing normal stuff, I use hibernate mode because hibernate mode doesn't consume power like sleep mode.

I don't do either. My computer runs 24/7 and has done so since I built it. There are MANY benefits of having the ability to access your computer from wherever without worrying if you left it on or not.

Generally during the day the PC is on (monitors shut off after a while) and sometimes during nights I shut it off. It may be on for several days straight. I got SSD so it starts up quick.

I shut it down purely so the HDD light isn't blinking while I'm trying to sleep. Yes, I know I could just unplug it, but with my case/board it's in a bit of an awkward place, plus I just feel bad not having it.

Always sleep. Whether mechanical boot drive, or solid state boot drive. ALWAYS sleep. (at least for me). It's just so much quicker and more convenient. Plus, with 32gbs of RAM, i don't really shut my programs down either. Usually it's just a bunch of Firefox tabs though. Never an issue in all the years of done this.

I lock it when I leave it during the day, but I update and shut it down when I go to bed at night.

I'm the opposite, with older computers I can be sure they won't magically wake up at 4am and start doing "things"...

Newer computers not so much, which is not only annoying but also kind of a security concern when they turn on by themselves without supervision or allowance... Also they boot up so fast, "sleep" doesn't really offer any advantages (to the user)

I generally use sleep because opening up everything manually is a massive pain even if cold boot and startup from sleep take pretty much the same time otherwise, however lately I've stared to have the problem of my computer waking up and unicorn barf lighting up my room in the middle of the night so I've resorted to just shutting everything down at night.

Full shut down, psu switch off.

It can be many days or even weeks between uses so no need to save time. When it boots to desktop in 15 seconds anyway it makes no difference.

Being able to access my desktop remotely is an excellent feature, but I can just turn my PC on and off remotely; I don't have to leave it running 24/7, I can just remotely flip it on and be able to use it in less than a minute later.

I simply maintain positive pressure inside the case. Never had to clean my PC in 12 months and it still looks brand new inside.

Depends how dusty the enviroment is. Imagine a pc in a shop enviroment, it'd get really dusty quickly if not in a cabinet to help reduce dust, not only dust but maybe wood particles. Then of course you'd clean your pc more often.

Hmm, me too, at least I'd think 3 intake fans, 1 exhaust would do that, but it still gets dusty rather quickly, especially the gpu backplate and the fan blades. :/

I turn mine off fully at night, sometimes unplugging it as well - dependent on me remembering, of course.

Then, during the day, if I have to stop gaming or whatever, but I expect to be back on within an hour or two, I'll just put it to sleep.

If know it'll be most of the day before i use it again then I'll usually just shut it down.

Old habits, I guess.

Of course, that works great for some people, but it wouldn't work for my network or my usage. It's also doing things during times where I'm not sitting at it or remotely connected to it, so I can't really let it go to sleep even if I wanted to.
