[RUMOR] AMD's mid-tier RX 6800 may be 1.5 times faster than Nvidia's top-tier RTX 3090 at mining

AMD's RX 6800 may be in extremely short supply as the mid tier card reportedly surpasses the RTX 3090 in mining performance.

My thoughts

Surely this can't be true. I mean AMD has always been a beast at compute on a budget, but the mid-tier card heavily out competing Nvidia's top tier would be astonishing. I'm sure we'll find out for sure in the coming days or weeks. On one hand, it's be amazing, on the other, RIP AMD GPU supplies if so.

It's the cache that will be why, bandwidth on that is huge and if the algo fits inside it and the main VRAM can push data in to and out of it fast enough to keep it going anything memory bound in performance is going to skyrocket.

Strong doubts. CDNA cards (dont see any so far) maybe, but RDNA is specifically meant to be good for gaming above everything else which means they are no longer strong in compute like GCN

Sorry but I god damn guessed it the second they mentioned it. That means the 3090 is going to be scary fast

Yea it's not like I was fully believing it, just cache is literally the only possible reason why it could have been if true. Literally nothing else is special or different about RDNA2 compared to any other GPU arch from AMD or Nvidia. But the cache is tiny for something like mining so 🤷‍♂️

Considering how well Nvidia is performing in F@H with CUDA support and how poorly AMD cards are doing, I wouldn't hold out much hope. Even if RDNA2 absolutely destroys Nvidia in gaming performance I expect them to still fall short of Nvidia in F@H (and other CUDA accelerated applications).

The Radeon VII is in 15th place between the 1080ti and 2060 Super. The Navi cards are in 39th place below the 980Ti, though this also includes the 5600/5600XT in the same result due to the way AMD drivers report the cards to F@H, so it's possible that the 5700XT could perform slightly better if it was separated from the rest. From what I can find the 5700XT does around 1.2-1.4M PPD (about the same as a 1070/1070 Ti).

 

It would be great if they could as hopefully that would encourage more people running AMD systems to start folding (join LTT team 223518) but I don't expect AMD to show as much improvement in F@H as in other areas.

Pretty sure in F@H case it's just drivers and more F@H core optimizations not being their for AMD GPUs, look how long it took for Navi to be supported at all lol. This isn't really going to change much though, academic community has zero interest in AMD GPUs so none of them will have the hardware to even attempt to make things run faster. CUDA or nothing, ROCm got lost in the forest somewhere and nobody is searching for them lol

The returns of mining isn't good enough to buy out the 6800 stocks compared to the alternatives they can buy. The Bitcoin bull run will come crashing down around spring/tax season and any smaller mining farms that try to buy up new cars will want to flip the them quick to make back their money.

 

Anyway it's gonna be a pain to buy new tech for awhile still.
