Why don't Motherboards or Cases have POST Speakers in them anymore?

I've been having boot troubles recently that I'm not sure is related to my video card, or the motherboard. I just ordered a couple 4 pin speakers to plug into my motherboard off Amazon, but I noticed I haven't had a computer in over a decade that had a speaker.

I miss the beep on start up

mostly because we have other methods now, like debug LED's or post code screens.

hell, some ASUS boards have full blown LCD panels for the post messages.

speakers are just obsolete

Well not completely obsolete as POST code screens are a feature reserved for enthusiast boards.

It's probably mainly a way for case manufactures to save cost and integrating a speaker with a nice cone is pretty hard given that cases nowadays have large front air intakes. The rear of the motherboard tray is often used to mount SSDs as well. So I can't think of any other place where a speaker can be placed in any modern case without looking out of place.

Can you imagine if we still had crash sounds from the old Macintosh days? That would be amusing.

Sometimes the speaker is included in the case.

Sometimes the speaker is soldered to the board like by B450M-A

All boards (that I'm aware of) have pins for a MB speaker either on or near the FP header.

Post codes are not always reflective of actual errors, while some post codes are error codes, Beep codes are 90% always an error code.

Get one on ebay for like a buck or two.

Probably because internal speakers are not as commonly used anymore. Back in the day they handled most of the systems audio for those who didn't have a sound card, with some audio going to the internal speaker regardless. Once sound cards became the norm I imagine they were mostly kept for Legacy reasons.

Most systems use LEDs of some sort to handle post codes and those that don't may have some sort of onboard buzzer beeper or a header for one. Some older cases also came with a speaker.

However even if it does have a header, it doesn't mean the BIOS itself will use it for post codes.

I still have a couple of old games floating around somewhere that will only output to the PC Speaker, unless run through a emulator.

My brother's ASRock B450M board came with a POST speaker cable thing, I stole it for my own PC, it's not very useful as I've never tinkered with my hardware enough to hear anything other than a 'beep', but I appreciate it since my motherboard otherwise has no other method to telling me what's wrong if something doesn't come up. It's a basic Asus Prime Z370-P so it's not the highest end house on the block.

They're definitely not as favored today, but for older or less-blingy motherboards, the speakers that attach to your motherboard exist.

My thermaltake case came with one of these.

What I miss on new cases is the reset button.

Because I would throw my pc out of the window immediately if it started to beep like freaking ps3 or 64k modem, that's why!

-> Moved to CPUs, Motherboards and Memory

Mainly because most midrange and higher end boards have LCD display with error code readout. Which is already more useful and easier to look at than beep codes. And lower end boards go to OEM-style builds where they are taken to tech for repairs. Or live in office space for 5 years and die.
