Microcenter Price Drops i7-9700k. Good deal?

i7-9700k for $220 plus $40 off a motherboard. I know there isn't any life in the z390 chipset but for $370 I don't think there is a better cpu/mobo combo for gaming. You can save more and go for a cheaper board too. A 10600k is really close to the 9700k single core, and 5% faster in multicore.But that's $40 more and only has $20 off a motherboard. There is no hyper threading on the 9700k being 8c 8t but in my use case it's unimportant. The 5600x coming out soon will be, according to amd, 20% faster and $299. Plus I'd need a motherboard, bringing that system cost to 30% more for just this supposed 20% more performance. I already made up my mind but what's your take?

TLDR : 9700k vs 10600k vs 5600x in cost/performance, what's the best deal for cpu+motherboard combo for gaming?

not that great deal. 220$ is not bad for 9700k, but whould have waiten 4 days for ryzne 5000.

probably will be in 4 days when Ryzen 5000 reviews come.

 

5600x is 300$, the non x probably wil be 250-280$, decent mobo: 70-90€. that will be around 350€; or with the 5600x, under 400$.

Well the 5600X isn't out yet so we can't really comment on performance.

Between the 9700K and 10600K, I'd get the 10600K primarily for the newer platform (Z490 vs Z390), but a 9700K for $220 is definitely not a bad deal.

Keep in mind that support for Zen 3 on B450 boards won't be coming until January.

Yes, the 5600 non x should be better buy than 9700k, even at 220$.

If AMD's perfomance numbers are true the 5600 would be much better than 9700k. If they are not correct 9700k for 220$ was not that bad.

if i needed a pc right now i'd pull the trigger on that combo, a 9700k will probably be slightly slower than a 5600, which will probably have a cooler included, it's a decent deal, not a great deal, knowing mc u coulda pushed for another 20bucks off.

I feel like ryzen's boost in gaming performance is going to be more reliant on that special compatability between the 5000 series and Big Navi. But again we won't know until release. Side note I currently have a 3600 and broken asus tuf x570. I had a lot of issues with ram compatibility with my board, m.2 storage devices not working properly, and now it's just shit the bed. Im going to get it RMA'd and sell it. I've owned several builds and there's something to be said about knowing your intel machine will just work. Maybe it's just the bad taste this x570 board has left in my mouth tho. My last intel build was a 4790k way back when. But i've been supporting Ryzen since zen 1 release with the 1700. I just want something that I know will work now.

Microcenter has dropped the price another 20 dollars, so its 200 now. You might be able to get a 20 dollar refund for the price difference. For $350 for a 9700k and an aorus pro mobo Id say you got a good deal if you are willing to upgrade your CPU/mobo in a year or two, since the 9700k is thread limited and this will probably become an issue in the not too distant future. If you are someone that wants to keep your CPU for several years I would have gone with the 9900k for a hundred dollars more since it will probably still edge out or tie a 5600x in gaming and be more future proof than a 9700k. The 5600x will probably get by with a cheaper cooler than a 9700k and be more future proof and better performing, but who knows when itll actually be available. 

 

You could always sell your 9700k and mobo and nearly come out even a year and some change down the road, and use that money to pay for an upgrade when the next ryzen or intel gen comes along.
