RX 6800 Ray Tracing Performance Leaked

Summary

The ray tracing performance of the RX 6800 on Shadow of the Tomb Raider has leaked. The leaked benchmark shows the 6800 scoring 46 FPS at 4K and 80 FPS at WQHD. Wccftech tested the RTX 3070 and RTX 2080ti with a similar system to the one used for the RX 6800 and showed the 6800 beats the 3070 without DLSS but the 3070 beats the 6800 with DLSS enabled. The system used for the 6800 leaked benchmark features a Ryzen 5 3500x and 16GB of DDR4.

My thoughts

If these benchmarks are true, I'm surprised AMD can compete with Nvidia in ray tracing performance. I'm still not sure if this justifies the $80 more the 6800 is compared to the 3070, especially considering the 3070 has DLSS.

3D Mark Timespy results have also leaked. The results show that the 6800 performs better in this benchmark than the RTX Titan. The Timespy results also show the 6800 competitive with the 3080.

Maybe, it is CPU bottlenecked but not that much, but............lots of buts.........................AMD had said that there new 5000-series ryzen CPUs will have better synchronization with the 69-series ( ) i.e. the new GPUs. So we will have to wait and BTW i think its going to be a huge mess that some games use Nvidia's brand of DXR, some use of AMD's (although AMD's version might have more users due to consoles).

Great, now lets see what it looks like at 1440P. I don't take 4K seriously. Its vastly over rated and won't even be the standard resolution for gaming for at least another generation anyway.

The AMD equivalent of DLSS is not out yet, according to rumors it's being worked on. So they were using native res.

 I see it, now thats a LOT better. I don't understand what makes 4K so appealing to people. The game will look and feel a lot smoother with a higher frame rate any damn way. ffs .....Looking forward to seeing RX 6800XT numbers.

Personally, whether I go AMD or Nvidia this generation, depends entirely on stocks if the cards really are on par with one another like that. It's whichever one I can snag, really.

 

I would love to go "used" and just get a 2080 ti... But the used market in Canada is ridiculous right now and people are still demanding nearly $1000 CAD for them on ebay. Like... I get it, you paid a lot for it... But it just ain't worth that much anymore when the 3070 exist for much less than that... Too bad there's no stock.

Thing with ray tracing is that it's relatively straight forward process. You can't wave a magic wand and make it faster. Calculating a ray bounce can't really be optimized beyond what anyone can do. You define amount of rays per pixel and amount of bounces with certain decline of light with every bounce. And to avoid using insane amounts of rays per pixel to get clean image, you use a denoiser. NVIDIA made big deal like their denoising is some magical thing done only by them.

 

Bottom line is, results are as I've expected them. I was expecting basically the same performance and NVIDIA taking the edge in DLSS supported titles. We'll have to see what's AMD's Super Resolution feature and if it works similar to DLSS in any way. Then we can expect similar outcome on AMD's side. I just hope AMD's implementation works in all games, that would be nice. Can't think of anyone else it would be. Coz Virtual Super Resolution is already rendering at higher resolution and outputting on lower resolution display. Super Resolution can only be something similar to DLSS. We'll see what it is. Hopefully soon.

Don't know much about the technology behind DLSS, can support be added via a software update? I know tensor cores power DLSS, but is the technology possible without these tensor cores?

Not really. NVIDIA charged a premium because only they had it. Now that everyone has it, both GPU makers, all consoles, it's a standard feature.

I think AMD's stance would be that its beating the hardware in raw power as opposed to some trickery and magic with DLSS. Also, one day they may have their own answer to DLSS and then the uplift would again beat the 3070 w/ DLSS. Though I do wish the 6800 was a tad more cheaper as I'm personally eyeing that myself now.

Some of the aib 3070s are pushing $600 so I think it will be very competitive against them. 

 

My prediction is that a lot of current intel users who only want to upgrade their gpu (and have a 650w psu) will settle on the 3070, but those building a new a system will go entirely AMD.

It might be interesting too when AMD launches the rest of the Navi stack. RX 6700 and RX 6600 series will be super interesting and with way how performance jumped, we can sort of expect RX 6600 to be at least on RX 5700XT level. And RX 5700XT was already somewhere on the level of GTX 1080Ti. A flagship from not that long ago. If they keep the performance per watt they'll have some really high performing, low power cards down the stack.

AMD's "brand" of DXR is just the DX12 implementation of it.  Nothing special or unique to their hardware.  There may be some specific optimizations for their cards, but the API is hardware agnostic.

Technically, so is "RTX". It's just NVIDIA branded crap slammed on top of what's essentially DXR. And since it's "RTX" they can make it NVIDIA specific. Meaning if they want to be real assholes, they can prevent it from running on Radeon cards as part of GameWorks proprietary nonsense used by game devs. But underneath, it's really still DXR. NVIDIA didn't invent ray tracing and DXR specs were actually laid out before RTX was even a thing. DXR life began officially in late 2017 and I'm fairly certain industry giants including AMD were involved in it (they all worked with ray tracing as offline rendering method before). That's the year when GTX 1080Ti was launched as a reference how far back that was.

Technically speaking, yes.  However - as is typical with Nvidia - they throw in their own proprietary tech that requires their hardware.  Some games may work, some may be tricked into working, but I wouldn't be surprised to see games which will not run ray-tracing on AMD cards at all (not without patching, at least), because of the Nvidia implementation.

 

Now, if we see games that only do RT on AMD cards and are blocked from running on Nvidia cards, I'll eat my hat.

Oh, I know that.  Technically, ray-tracing has been around for decades, there just wasn't hardware to handle it real time on desktops until a few years ago.  I'm not even referring to RTX, that was just the first to brand itself around the tech.

AMD does have "ray tracing accelerators" built into their RX6000 GPUs. I think there's supposed to be one per CU.
