Question on reliability of older OCZ psu in 2020

masterk33f

I want to build a secondary pc out of parts I have lying around  it would have a i5 4690k and an r9 390. The psu in question is an old 80+ OCZ fatal1ity 550w. Not sure about the entirety of this psu's usage over the course of its life as it came in a hand me down machine. Is it gonna be reliable for a little while longer or should I move on? Thanks in advance for your responses!

Haswell and R9 3 series are going to be a bit power hungry for 550w especially considering it’s a used unit. Maybe if you do some undervolting and underclocking it might work otherwise your playing with fire (pun intended).

Phew, I mean if it was a new quality PSU I'd say 550w would be good but that thing is from 2009 if I'm not mistaking (https://www.anandtech.com/show/3985/three-550w-psus-for-different-prices/6). I don't know if it's sensible to try and use it on modern parts. It's probably a good idea to look into something new. Sure, if it lasted 11 years it probably won't break down instantly buuuut I wouldn't advise trying, especially with a 390...

Always a good idea to take a look at this list for a new one:

Still using my old ocz1000w I bought back when I got a 3770k new.
But now it runs four cards. Still the best one I’ve owned. Sleeved cables instead of all the cheap stuff I currently own.
