ECC rams don't work on Asus ROG Strix B450-F

Hi all,

I built a Unraid server based on "320 TERABYTES in a normal case!!" - The DIY 4k editing NAS.

My build is exactly the same as Linus tutorial I have the Ryzen 2600 on ROG Strix B450-F.

The only difference is using ECC ram instead of UDIMM, and I got the Samsung 8GB 2RX8 PC4-2133P-RE0-10-DC0 (M393A1G43DB0-CPB0Q)

the server doesn't boot, onboard LED turns orange yellow. What should i do?

Thank you!

Wing

Motherboard doesn't support ECC memory, why did you choose it?

Have you tried different RAM to confirm everything else works?

Bear in mind there is no official support for ECC or RDIMM on that platform, so it's somewhat hit and miss.

Yeah why did you buy it? ECC is usually for servers. You need non-ECC memory for that board or buy an ECC compatible board.

I tested the build with corsair UDIMM. it works like a charm and its super quiet.

Linus mentions that Asus ROG Strix B450-F has ECC capability and I see that in the bios as well...DRAM ECC is already enable, I am not sure what's wrong of it?

What you have is Registered ECC memory which only works with EPYC.

Ryzen supports Unbuffered ECC.

From what I can see that memory is registered ECC memory. Ryzen, and therefore also all AM4 boards only support non-registered ecc RAM.

Edit: Not all AM4 boards support ECC, bad wording there^^ But all only support UDIMMS

He also says you need UDIMM ECC RAM. What you have is RDIMM ECC.

Ryzen in general only support unbuffered ECC, Registered / Buffered ECC only supported in server chips.

And not all motherboard support ECC.

  • 1 year later...

It's old topic but just confirming here. Running TrueNAS for 2 years using those components:

DDR4 Unregistered DIMM Samsung M391A2K43BB1-CTD (4 x 16GB)

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X

Asus ROG Strix B450-F GAMING

I'm pretty sure Registered DIMM will not work.

It's important to double check mainboard capability of supporting ECC RAM.

It's important to double check CPU capability of supporting ECC RAM.
