Looking to upgrade the storage in this

ErykYT3

So I've got this,

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Notebook-i7-4710HQ-External-GTX-860M/dp/B00LJOTNXG?th=1

I want to upgrade the storage to a proper ssd as I took out the WD Black 1tb sshd that was in it before because disk usage was always at 100% most of the time and it took me 15 minutes to boot up at my uni's library.

I don't plan on using it as a uni laptop for long, until the start of next year at the very most. What SSD is recommended? Would any regular ssd fit?

I just got my additional sata data cables in the post, I'm going to transfer the data over. Thanks in advance.

Any 2.5 SATA SSD will do for your use case. At minimum you need 128 GB storage, for Windows, apps etc. Choose the capacity based on how much stuff you got.

HAL9000: AMD Ryzen 9 3900x | Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black | 32 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 MHz | Asus X570 Prime Pro | ASUS TUF 3080 Ti | 1 TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus + 1 TB Crucial MX500 + 6 TB WD RED | Corsair HX1000 | be quiet Pure Base 500DX | LG 34UM95 34" 3440x1440

Hydrogen server: Intel i3-10100 | Cryorig M9i | 64 GB Crucial Ballistix 3200MHz DDR4 | Gigabyte B560M-DS3H | 33 TB of storage | Fractal Design Define R5 | unRAID 6.9.2

Carbon server: Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX100 S7p | Xeon E3-1230 v2 | 16 GB DDR3 ECC | 60 GB Corsair SSD & 250 GB Samsung 850 Pro | Intel i340-T4 | ESXi 6.5.1

Big Mac cluster: 2x Raspberry Pi 2 Model B | 1x Raspberry Pi 3 Model B | 2x Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+

Could you possibly explain to me what the previous drive is?

And what the 25gb is, a partition?

Ssd is great upgrade,

But disk usage at 100% all the time is a separate issue.

What's your ssd budget and what size are you looking for?

500gb would be fine but 1tb under 100 £ perhaps.

Your 1tb is full I doubt 500 gb would be enough.

Well I'm re purposing this for something to use for taking notes at uni. Not going to be gaming on it.

Though at the same time I don't know What Windows + other apps I may need would leave me with at 500.

I'll look into a 1tb as I'll be giving the laptop away in the coming months anyway.

Well the ssd I recommended is on sale but its a little over budget. However it doesn't have dram cache as where  I can't think of a cheaper one that does

Lenovo (and some other manufacturers) create a second partition on the drive to reserve for recovery. Generally it is not necessary and just includes basic utilities for regular consumer. It is still located on the same drive as your OS.
