Intel has turned on its first real gaming GPU, the Intel Xe DG2, for the first time. That might sound like it's just flipped a switch on a test rig and the thing has burst into life with little fanfare, but it is a lot more significant than that... though obviously less exciting than actually having a functional GPU that can match something like the upcoming Nvidia RTX 3070.

 

Though that is rumoured to be where Intel's Xe DG2 graphics card is set to be targeted, whether attached to some beefy Tiger Lake-H gaming laptop, or plumbed into a fully fledged desktop PC.

In its recent Q3 earnings call Bob 'El Cisne' Swan has been trying to talk up a tough quarter for the big chip-making machine. And with its rivals set to launch the new AMD Ryzen 5000 range of CPUs and its own next-gen enthusiast-class Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards, he's also been keen to mention the fact that it's not all about processors at Intel anymore either.

"Our first discrete GPU DG1 is shipping now and will be in systems for multiple OEMs later in Q4," says Bob (via Seeking Alpha). "We also powered on our next-generation GPU for client DG2. Based on our Xe high-performance gaming architecture, this product will take our discrete graphics capability up the stack into the enthusiast segment."

 

Bold and exciting words.

 

A 3070's performance is a high target to hit for a first GPU, and I'm very skeptical about that suggestion because AMD couldn't pull something like that off in recent years even when not starting its GPU business from scratch. And if this is expected to be a laptop and not desktop GPU, then I don't think a 3070's level of performance is even possible at this time.

 

But it's great to hear that Intel are making progress, and I'm glad that this report doesn't seem to hint at there being any truth to a previous rumour of Intel planning to abandon its GPU development project.

"Ocular proof!!!" They say....well Intel does have Raja Koduri under its belt with its discrete graphics processing division, which prior, used to work for AMD and introduced Polaris graphics cards for AMD, which righted AMD's ship four years ago to a more competitive future (look at it today, especially now Big Navi).

3070 level performance is definitely optimistic and unrealistic in my opinion, I looked at the article to see who the source for that claim was and... it's Moore's Law Is Dead. Basically you can safely ignore that claim. He also said "Target performance between the RTX 3070 & RTX 3080", so he claims the target performance is actually better than an RTX 3070... what kind of crack is this guy smoking?

Hmmm. Interesting. I can't wait to see how it plays out. More competition is always better.

I could see them competing pretty strongly out of the gate. You have to remember, this is Intel. They make so much more than AMD, that they can simply throw money at the problem (as is shown by their hiring of the right, high priced talent) to solve it, where AMD doesn't have that luxury.

I think MLID was just quoted as saying 6nm process and a few other things. Not the performance target.

No, I took the bullet for everyone and watched his video, that's where my quote came from. I'm not willing to watch the whole video, I just skipped to that part and he said that claim comes from one if his "sources".

My memory is that what intel was doing is basically using multiple Xe cores, so 2 cores will be less than double the performance of one Xe core. Power usage goes way up though.  The Xe core is pretty cool but it’s going to take quite a few of them to hit 3070 performance levels. I am also doubtful.  They might be aiming not at a 3070 but at a 1650 though.

Part of the issue is they're calling a lot of different things Xe. The tile based stuff is some kind of general processing unit/encode+decode system, not a graphics chip. It's super confusing and means any rumours are messy because we don;t allways know what the original source was talking about. Throw in the fact Intel's management got shook up a couple of months back which will have altered some of their plans about somthing and you've got a mess for anyone trying to figure out whats going on.

Any release of Intel GPU will be exciting for me. Because no matter how bad it is, it will find its place on the market and meddle with competition. And that's always good. And eventually they'll get things somewhere, that's for sure.

Looking at the optimist in me (which is a very rare thing), if they hit RTX 3070 desktop performance in a laptop ON THEIR SECOND TRY (since this is the DG2), that's pretty nutty. You've got to remember this, an RTX 2070 MaxP (115W) in a laptop is about equivalent to a desktop 2060 so having 3070 performance in a laptop would be equivalent to a 2080 TI desktop in a laptop! That's amazing!

 

All Intel then has to do is actually release it rather soon to compete with Ampere and Big Navi but it does look like this is more a RTX 4000 / RX 7000 (Navi 3X) competitor since they only just got it turned on.

My memory is a 2080max-q was more like 1660 level of performance.  I’ve never owned one though.  Might vary by workload.

Maybe they talked about the RTX 3070 mobile and not the fully fledged desktop 3070.

Keep in mind that mobile versions of GPUs are pieces of crap.

My overclocked desktop 1660 easily beats a RTX 2070 mobile.

I'm sure we had an indication of when DG1 was first powered on, and sure enough, I stared the thread on it back in October 2019:

Given that DG1 is just going into products now, we're looking ball park a year. If this sort of timescale applies to DG2, that'll be 2H next year product. I doubt we'll see a major generation from either red or green at that time (a minor refresh at best), but if Intel can do something competitive in the mid range it'll be a good starting point to build from.

According to TechCrunch Intel is already shipping the DG1 for a holiday release. It’s mainly targeted towards the low end esports builds but still that’s awesome. With Imagination coming to the scene as well we are in for a wild ride and the end of NVIDIA monopolistic reign

Definately this. Never would I have guessed that the number of GPU makers doubled in 2020! (that makes consumer PC GPUs)

he said intel is targeting that, but he and many of his sources don't expect it to be anywhere near that

Exactly, just because MLID has some pretty unbelievable claims in his videos doesn't mean he doesn't bring these for a reality check
