Copyright, law itself, reflects a time when the printing press was starting to be a thing, and books were hand-written. That's 580 years ago. Now any piece of data can be copied and duplicated a billion times in seconds, and copyright law was just not designed around that.

 

What will ultimately happen, maybe not this century, is that copyright will stop mattering, as every piece of content will be available without the artificial scarcity. You make it, everyone who wants it will have it within seconds of you making it available, with no middle-men.

The 580 year old problem remains the same though.  Creators get paid for their work.  If they don’t get paid they don’t create.  For some that payment is in distribution.  The problem with that though is that kind of content is almost always only an advertisement of some kind, be it for a product or political faction or religious group.  And those groups are generally perfectly happy with falsehood as long as it serves their purpose.

Copyright law is about protecting people's work. Thats all its about. Yeah, big corporations abuse it, but its still essential to help promote innovation and a desire to create new works.

Scarcity happens because some countries refuse to protect copyrighted works. So those countries dont get access to the content. Plus some of these companies have dumb distribution contracts, but with many studios/Media companies having their own streaming service, that could change in the future.

Yeah, however all of earths knowledge, and media has been recorded in a digital way in only the last 40 years. So you can not even predict where technology will be. But suffice it to say, it's a lot harder to create content that is worth paying for if you are competing against content in the public domain which is why companies like Disney try very hard to not let their content into the public domain, while still trying to pillage the public domain for their own use.

The argument Disney was making for their stuff revolved around the time honored practice of animators making short films in the margins of major films visible only to the projectionists.  One of the more famous ones was done in the 50’s and is a scene of Minnie and Mickey having sex.  They were worried about knockoff Mickey Mouse stuff appearing everywhere.  It was such a concern that they spent a bunch of money to temporarily move away from Mickey Mouse before the judgement.  Imho the problem with the judgement is there really should have been a special separate system for long running stuff set up.  Instead they just extended everything to cover the long running stuff.  It became a massive problem as a result.

They should just modify the manual to include some creative content videos, that's the only thing RIAA was able to take issue with, which is laughable.

I'm surprised FloatPlane is not there yet.

The fact is is people who pirate videos and distribute them generally have the skills to write a script that downloads the entire video. So removing this code doesn’t stop them.
 

I guess their lawyers need to justify their fees and so they go after stuff like this.
 

Even with scripts like this, manually downloading content from YouTube is inconvenient. Anyone who has $10 per month to spare will most likely get a subscription or watch ads.

 

As a side note, with an iPhone 11 Pro or 12 Pro you can use the camera to record a screen playing any video at 4K 60fps and the audio will be good enough. Are they going to ban smartphone cameras now?!

As a side note, with an iPhone 11 Pro or 12 Pro you can use the camera to record a screen playing any video at 4K 60fps and the audio will be good enough. Are they going to ban smartphone cameras now?!

So the entire source code for Youtube-DL is now hosted on the DMCA page on GitHub (although you need the correct hash to find it, which is, for example, 416da574ec0df3388f652e44f7fe71b1e3a4701f).

So if RIAA wants to take down this copy of Youtube-DL they will have to send a DMCA takedown notice to take down the DMCA repo on Github.

its github being taken down is meaningless. Git is a distributed version control system. Everyone that's ever cloned it has a full copy of the history of the project (including presumably the developers themselves)

Literally all they have to do is create a new repository somewhere else and re-point their local repositories to the new remote and push.

That depends. Generally you DONT get a free lawyer in Civil cases. Criminal cases are the ones that require you to get a lawyer. Piracy doesn't always fall under Criminal because the Federal Government has a hard time prosecuting the cases. So many times Copy right holders will just sue the individuals, in previous cases the RIAA settled for a few thousand dollars.

And even then they don’t always win.  There was a rather famous example some years ago of the RIAA going after a single mother who didn’t have a few thousand dollars because her 7 year old got ahold of her phone and downloaded a few pop songs.

I think its because Federal Judges are getting sick and tired of bull shit law suits. So they are not requiring a bit more proof.

I haven’t been following closely enough.  There have been major changes in the US federal judiciary over the last 4 years though so onorous many members of the majority party at the time actually quit over it till that party lost majority.  I don’t know what the US judiciary thinks.

Thats not quite how it read to me.  It’s more like “we didn’t do ANY of the stuff the RIAA said we did.  The RIAA uses BS automation that sucks at what it pretends to do.  The RIAA is the one with its thumb in its trousers, not us”. Eat shit and go to hell implies a refusal to do anything whether there was a violation or not.  They did stuff anyway, and there was no violation.  “Eat shit” perhaps. Extra helping of “you incompetent asshat” also perhaps.  Didnt see a “go to hell” though.
