Very strange ram issue - x3650 m4

Just got some extra sticks of ram to fill the empty slots and the new sticks work except for the fact that they dont work if all 3 slots in a channel that they are installed in are populated

1/3 slots work

2/3 slots work

3/3 slots ignores every stick

Doesn't matter if they are the same stick, mixed or in what slot

3 slots?  What motherboard is this?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Ah.  an antique intel rack server board.  This would explain why it sounded so odd.  3 slots sounds like triple channel memory and that hasn’t been seen in consumer space in a very very long time.  The only page I can find on it says it has 24 slots which implies quad channel memory.  That could be part of the problem.

Its quad channel with 3 sticks per channel but if there's 3 sticks of ram in 1 channel it works fine, if there's 3 sticks in 1 channel and 1 of those 3 sticks is the new ram it just dies

You have to be careful when using 3 DIMMs per channel, not just any RAM will work.

So could you give us the part number of the RAM you are using then we can figure out what it is and it's support matrix with this server.

In addition to leadeaters comment, make sure you mirror the configuration across the banks for both CPU's as well otherwise it will still fail POST.

HCDIMM's are quite expensive, so basically for the best support, use Dual Ranked 1.5v RDIMM's. So memory marked as 2R, and ECC Reg.

Essentially the memory you're looking for will be marked as 2Rx4 PC3-8500R  (not PC3L or 1R)

I just saw a question that no one wanted to touch and was about to fall off the end of the “topics” stack so I took a crack at it.

😜 It's fine, I was just giving some light hearted banter. Hope you don't take it too seriously or offensively.

No worries.  You did make a valid point.  It’s not a section I belong in really.  I haven’t dealt with servers almost at all and what little I did it was when 33mhz was considered quick.

It is quad channel, Xeons support 3 DIMMs per channel so 3 x 4 = 24 DIMMs per CPU

Edit:

Oh damn it that was already pointed out, ignore lol
