New motherboard

Rlmva

My motherboard doesn’t have vrm cooling, and I’m looking to get one that does. I currently have a asrock b450m hdv r4.0 and I’m looking to get one that’s about $100, preferably b550 if possible. Any suggestions?

What CPU are you pairing with the motherboard right now --- or what CPU you plan to use?

Are you overclocking?

Really limited selection with $100 USD.

If you can stretch it, the MSi MAG B550 Bazooka for $114.99.

At that point, might as well try to get the MSi B550-A Pro, or Gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro.

You can buy heatsinks to stick on them for a lot cheaper, something like https://www.amazon.com/Printer-Heatsink-Thermal-Conductive-Adhesive/dp/B07RKHRHJV/ref=sr_1_7?_encoding=UTF8&c=ts&dchild=1&keywords=Heatsinks&qid=1603236831&s=pc&sr=1-7&ts_id=2998409011  If you look around you may be able to find larger ones that can cover more than 1. Probably better than the chunk of metal heat spreaders most mobos come with anyway 😆

I’m only seeing an a stock b450m pro4 and that does have a VRM heat sink.  I don’t know how good it is.  I understand some of them are worthless.

There’s always one of those fans or an add on VRM cooler for your current board. Sounds cheaper.  If you’ve got an x3xx motherboard though it could be worth it.  I haven’t seen any b550 in the $100 range that are worth buying.  One of the issues with b550 is it’s not a ton cheaper than x570.

If all you’ve got is a 65w chip Theres probably no need.  It would only be useful if you planned on upgrading your cpu.

Any plans to upgrade to Ryzen 5000 series if you were to get a B450 motherboard?

What are you using right now?

If you are not planning overclock the Ryzen 3600 at all, you might be fine with what you have now...

I do not plan on getting a 5000 series cpu if I got a b450, but maybe later down the line i would get a better 3000 series second hand.

The main difference between b450 and b550 is ports, Pcie 3.0 vs. 4.0, and price.  B550 in general also has way more VRM than you need but a lot of b450 does too so it matters little.  A 3600 with no overclock is actually at the higher end of a series boards.  A520 might possibly be worth looking at in your case.  They’re not very common and not available everywhere though. There is supposition they may be phased out entirely in favor of keeping b450.  If there was an a4xx board it might also be worth looking at.  Such a thing never happened though. There is only a320 and a few a520.  x3xx boards appear to not be receiving future updates though making them very questionable purchases. If you need pcie4.0 or USB3.1 on the motherboard, or thunderbolt at all, b550 would be needed.  If all you need is USB3.0 though b450 may turn out to be a better buy.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
