RTX 3080 or RTX 3070 for 4790K (@4.8)

YesThisIs

First things first: My 4790K is running at 4.8Ghz and i play at g-sync module monitor at 1440p. Bottleneck might be an slight issue but my question:

I am from Finland and at local retailer i have locked 3080 TUF for 740€. (I ordered it in 1.10 so might have wait for a while to it to arrive).

TehcteamRGB and few others have been making videos about 4790k performance. In 2080ti bottleneck is almost 0%. The GPU runs at 99% most of the times in the games i play at. From TechteamRGB video https://youtu.be/8YaHvh8A9Fw

Running RTX 3080 BFV gets 156fps 4790k and 165fps 3900X. This are both at stock speed, i'm running at 4.8.

Now my second options is RTX 3070 TUF OC from another retailer. They have "launch deal" for 609€. But more reasonable retailer (that i trust) it's 659€ for TUF 3070.  If i go with this route, i will be F5:in the F out of multiple retailers.

My question: Is 3080 TUF vs 3070 TUF OC difference worth around 100-140€ difference? And this is all just speculation at this point. but 3080 might struggle a bit in 1440p vs 4k (vs. 2080ti). and 3070 might be litle bit faster at 1440p that 2080 ti.

I really need some options, should i wait 3080 tuf out and wait with my 980ti or go and try to grab 3070 at launch?

i think the 3080 is worth the difference over the 3070 and with your cpu the performance increase would still be significant.

i also assume at some point you'll upgrade your cpu as well and at that point you'll be sorry you didn't pay 150 more for the 3080.

Your cpu is 4/8 with high clocks and middling to not-so-great ipc.  My understanding is the 3070 is supposed to be in theory (because it hasn’t been tested at all) about at 2080ti level. RDNA2 will be announced and possibly priced before the 3070 is.  The phrase “wait for independent reviews” has rarely been more appropriate.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I wouldn't say the 3080 will struggle in 1440p. More the other way around that your 4790k will just not unleash its full potential so a 3070 might be better paired in that sense.

Would you be happy (enough) with 3070 performance to save a 100? Secondly you say you have a 3080 confirmed now. It may be a while before that arrives, but similarly there's the change you won't be able to get a 3070 anytime soon if the 3080 was anything to go by, so there's that to consider as well.

Thank you all for your answers. Most answers i get (in this topic) in my local forum or over at Reddit are "Don't bother, its an bottleneck. Update your CPU" REALLY not what i'm looking for.

I agree with you. Even if the 3080 runs at 90% of its performance (Worst case scenario i have seen when somebody was running low speed DDR3. (I'm running Dominators 2133mhz CAS10). So even at 90% it's faster that 3070.

This is what i'm thinking. 100€ is around the price i would save. But i think it's not worth it to save that. I ordered 1.10 my 3080 TUF and right now there is no ETA. 3.10 my local retailers rised the prices by 100€ more. So now its 840€ for TUF non-oc. And i recon if i someday few years down the line sell the 3080, i would get more value out of it compared 3070.

Might aswell crab the 3080.

Re: cpu bottleneck.

”not what you’re looking for” doesn’t make it not true. I’ve got a 4770k@4.0 slower than your machine but same ipc.  I get 80% cpu usage burying a rx580 in fallout 4.

Then there is something else wrong in your PC. What ram are you running? Also how much CPU usage you got at background? Also what resolution are you running?

That link that i posted benchmarked 4790k (Stock) 1440p BFV compared to 3900X (Much more powerfull CPU in theory). Difference was 9FPS.

This guy is running 2080ti and is getting 60-70% CPU usage 1080p. 2080ti usage is 96-99%.

I know this CPU is OLD, but Intel has slacked the CPU-upgrades over the years. 4xxx-7xxx performance difference aint that much.

Also multiple Youtubers i have looked at are running 2080ti:

Well part of it is I’m nearly a full ghz slower than you.  Another part is I’m sure a normal amount of stuff was running in the background.  None of this matters imho.

I personally project 4/8 will not last beyond 2021 for gaming.  Consoles define new games and the upcoming consoles are 8/16 which will be cut down a bit but I don’t know how much.  The old consoles were 8/8 cutdown to 6/6, which is well within the range of 4/8.  The new consoles aren’t.  Both of our machines still work but they are on borrowed time.  The 3070 isn’t even out yet.  It could be shit.  It could be awesome.  It has not been independently tested and manufacturer claims all run through marketing.  What I have read is a 3070 is vaguely like a 2080ti.  But only vaguely.  You might or might not get a 3070 to run well. No one not under NDA knows.

Anyone telling you a 4790K won't bottleneck a 2080 Ti has zero credibility imo.  That's hogwash, if a 3930K like I used to have bottlenecks a 1080 Ti there's no way that processor wouldn't bottleneck a 2080 Ti or 3080.  Even if it's 10%, 10% can be a big difference in games that run at the edge of GSync/VSync settings given whatever your  monitor runs at, if you run that sort of thing.

The question is HOW MUCH, not if, and I would wager the performance you'd see from going to a 9900K or 10900K would be "noticeable" but not astounding.  I can tell you when I went from a 3930K to 9900K with my 1080 Ti, I saw quite large improvements in CPU-bound games (we're talking almost double the FPS in some instances), and still quite noticeable improvements in GPU intensive games, because of the system throughput improvements.

Since you already have a 3080 on the way, enjoy it once it arrives, then plan on a smart-upgrade once the AMD 5000-series CPUs hit, since that will give you options on both sides of the table that are great upgrades.

Seconding this. This CPU is definitely a bottleneck, no doubt about that, but OP specifically mentioned having watched videos of performance in games he played and being happy with that (or at least didn't express any dissatisfaction with it).

The thing with bottlenecks is that there is always one somewhere. I think it's much more important that you understand there is one and (if possible) from benchmarks determine its extent for you and if it's severe enough for you to be bothered by not having those extra frames. Value for money in that case is another discussion, but in this case we'll have to factor in availability as well.

Exactly. You rounded up nicely. Lets compare it to 3900X = BFV (that i play a lot). I will get 9FPS more in 3900x with 3080. (Vs. 4790k and 3080)

3900X is 499€ currently in here. Decent B550 mobo is 150€. DDR4 ram another 100€ = 749€ for 9FPS increase.

Currently i'm getting bfv 75ish FPS.  81FPS boost when i upgrade to 3080. This for 740€. Is it worth really to pay 749€ for 9 fps more? I know that 3900X is extreme example but that's the CPU that we can currently compare against.

The part where you’re wondering whether you want a 3080 or a 3070 for a cpu where people are arguing about whether it can handle a 2080ti or not?   The answer appears to be “sure, if the cpu/gpu ratio of the game is low enough”  I’m getting a “NO! My cpu is FINE!” vibe from you.  No one knows how fine your cpu will be.  I happen to be in the “not for very much longer” camp.  There is also the “game developers won’t dare making games that can’t run on 4/8” camp (which has been weakened lately by 4/4 machines starting to fail at gaming) and the “4/8 is already dead” camp which I used to be in.  It was sort of a futurist position though.
