The ultimate showdown - 3DMark releases new cross-platform benchmark

williamcll

When it comes to comparing ARM and x86 chips, it is normally done through number only synthetic benchmarks which sometimes doesn't reflect real life situations. 3DMark has released an new benchmark that are now compatible on both platforms. Available on google play store, apple app store and steam. Note that since this is Vulkan, DirectX exclusive features will not be available on this benchmark.

Quote

3DMark Wild Life shows the advanced rendering techniques and post-processing effects that are possible on modern mobile devices. Wild Life uses the Vulkan graphics API on Windows PCs and Android devices. On iOS devices, it uses the Metal API. You can compare your benchmark scores across platforms. Wild Life measures the GPU performance of Windows notebooks and tablets. It is designed for the same class of hardware as 3DMark Night Raid but uses the Vulkan graphics API rather than DirectX 12. You can compare your results with scores from Apple and Android devices.

While the top scores all show PC specs that normally dominate other benchmarks, I was able to get some numbers from other platforms on various websites:

A12 5535
A12Z 10000
11ProMax 6887

A13 7000
My Oneplus 6 8+128GB (845): 1446
855+ 2340
865 3800
1660s 39000
8700K+1080Ti 65136

2060 51350
2070s 66000

Thoughts: It's certainly a good to see whether or not a what qualcomm and apple claims that their processors are on par with PC are truthful or not. But its also a great indicator on how well Chips are improving on the ARM side since most of the time they have the better manufacturing node improvements in comparison to Desktop chips.

Running on some devices now...

iPad mini 2019: 5803 34fps (better than 76% of other devices)

Pixel 3a - 665 4fps (better than 4% of other devices)

8086k+1080Ti - 60276 361fps. Doesn't say how much better it is but I assume it destroys all mobile devices.

Bench requires Android 10 and I think all my other devices are unsupported.

True. I actually want to do this, just too lazy to back everything up. I have an extra one of these phones, maybe I'll give it a go on there and see if it is worth it (should just buy a new phone tbh)

I’m not finding it on the Apple store.  There is “slingshot” and “ice storm” and “overhead api” but no “wild life”

UPDATE: found it.  It didn’t work for 3dmark search but if I searched the company I found it... weird...

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I'll have to brag a little about how my phone is #2 on the list of mobile-phone scores:

Yes, that is my literal phone, not just someone else's same model 💪

Sure, and by a very impressive margin, too. It's not even close to being a contest, the iPhone is running circles around my phone and laughing loudly while at it!

Yeah. I'm guessing Metal API is better optimized or less demanding than Vulcan API and that is why it's running it so much better.

I don't think it is the API at all, but the hardware. Vulcan is supposed to be a lightweight/low level API anyway. Apple's chip designs are just nice. I only wish they weren't only on Apple products so I didn't have to buy an iPad for mobile gaming.
