How to Test In Real-Time Different CPU Fan Speeds?

TechnicGeek

Hi,

I want to test CPU fan in different speeds in real-time. Does not have to be RPM, can be also in percentage like 10%, 20%, 30% etc.

Anyone knows of a software that allows this?

a lab power supply would be best if you need to test the fan at any voltage or speed

Either this or an Arduino providing a PWM signal.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Fedora 38 x86_64

Secondary: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Fedora 38 x86_64

Server: AMD Athlon PRO 3125GE, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 ECC, TrueNAS Core 13.0-U5.1

Home Laptop: Intel Core i5-L16G7, 8 GB 4267 MHz LPDDR4x, Windows 11 Home 22H2 x86_64

Work Laptop: Intel Core i7-10510U, NVIDIA Quadro P520, 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Windows 10 Pro 22H2 x86_64

Or if you mean inside computer, using fan controller software or oldschool DC fan controller is also good.

@LogicalDrm I mean CPU fan.

That doesn't clarify it. CPU fan is same as any case fan. So are you testing just fan, or whole CPU cooler performance etc.?

I am testing only CPU fan.

Ryzen 3600X stock fan has a maximum RPM of 3000.

My SYS_FAN has a maximum RPM of 1243.

That's what System Information Viewer shows me so CPU fan and SYS_FAN

are not the same when it comes to maximum RPM.

While inside the PC would then be the answer.

You can use software, mainly FanControl or Argus Monitor to set certain percentage to each header. But I don't think you will find out anything you don't already know. Fan control, when done in software and not directly (hardware fan controllers and external solutions), only uses percentage of full speed. This is easier way to do it since fans are different, have different max rpm and within same model even some differences with how fast they actually will spin. So you can't do rpm or even voltage based controls with software.

Even knob-control for 3pin fans is more based on percentage, while it controls voltage given to fan. PWM controls rely on controller telling fan how many pulses it gets.
