Apple finally enters 5G - iPhone 12 + homePod mini announcement

Consumers are dumb. Most won't care about ProMotion either way, and they would have much worse battery life out of the box. The only way to disable ProMotion on an iPad is a toggle hidden in accessibility settings, they're not gonna shine a light on the ability to turn off their flagship feature.

Apple had a decision to make, it was either 5G or 120hz, and they chose 5G. Remember, on Apple's website they rate the iPhone 12 Pro Max at the same battery life as the smaller iPhone 11 Pro Max, so they obviously couldn't do both. It's much easier to market "your Netflix will be faster" than 120hz will ever be to the main public. It will come, it just got cut this year.

For most people, the iPhone 11 series is still the one to get, especially now that it's gonna be cheaper. The iPhone 12 series seems like a giant waste of money.

especially considering a lot of their user base buying Pro Max'es do not even use them to their fullest ability anyway.

We literally buy $1000 texting and netflix machines if you think about it.

I don't really get your point, getting used to it wouldn't suddenly make it less responsive.

My point is on UI refresh rate isn't something you notice. Sure you can drag tabs about in windows on 2 different monitors but in general usage your eyes adapt to the rate. Unless you're doing something where the extra frames mean something (a FPS game for example) there's not much point. I have dual monitors, one with 165Hz and one at 75Hz, for just productivity I don't notice the refresh rate difference because it's not doing anything that would make it matter.

Well idk, these 3 are pretty close TBH. The biggest difference between them is how they handle color, which is personal preference to a degree.

Yeah, was mostly talking about the cameras. (Don't think the 5 is meant to compete with the 12 pros in most areas given that they cost like 40% more)

I mean mid tier chipset in relation to cameras, Snaps are behind the A series by a LONG way to start with and the 5 is using a mid tier chip which you'd think would hinder the camera processing. Overall though there's not much left for phone cameras to improve on. They aren't and won't rival even an entry level mirrorless so if you're really into photography just get a proper camera (I tested my 11 Pro vs my bottom tier mirrorless and it doesn't get close). Cinematography is another story where the iPhone is a good entry camera for people to mess around with and shoot like student films or even YouTube on, though it's nice to see Apple continuing to push video on when android hasn't caught the XS yet. Focusing on 8K video that looks horrendous rather than getting 1080p and 4K right.

Personally I'm not getting the 12, I got the 11 Pro to stop me getting the 12 because it's a big update and I'll just wait for the next one when all the kinks are ironed out. The new Homepod and how it integrates is interesting though, might be worth a test run.

Was hoping the pro got rid of the notch or at least a change there. Guess I’ll be holding onto this iPhone X for another release. Fingers crossed for iPhone 13.

Different people have different opinions, I guess. I use a 144hz monitor with a 60hz and even the smallest thing like moving my mouse around or scrolling through a document feel more responsive on 144, so for me the difference is definitely noticeable.

Suppose so. Think my reasoning is:

1) Does it improve how the device functions? No words are words no matter what refresh rate you're at.

2) Are you missing anything because you don't have it? No the information I'm looking at is repeated indefinitely until I move it.

No under screen touch ID, same size notch, no storage increase, no screen res bump, no high refresh rate, no type c connector, same 15W wireless charging, BUUUUT it does look really good IMO. Not worth $1299 though

Suppose so. Think my reasoning is:

1) Does it improve how the device functions? No words are words no matter what refresh rate you're at.

2) Are you missing anything because you don't have it? No the information I'm looking at is repeated indefinitely until I move it.

Again, that's an opinion. My answer to both questions would be yes. High refresh rate doesn't make a difference if you are reading text, but if you are scrolling through text it makes a big difference and even in general usage it makes my device feel snappier and more responsive. Is 60hz a deal breaker? Hell no, 120hz definitely more of a nice to have than a necessity.

No under screen touch ID, same size notch, no storage increase, no screen res bump, no high refresh rate, no type c connector, same 15W wireless charging, BUUUUT it does look really good IMO. Not worth $1299 though

I wouldn't have expected under-screen Touch ID. Aside from duplication, there's also the question of whether or not it'd be fast enough to satisfy Apple's goals. If there was any Touch ID, I'd have expected it in the power button.

Would be interesting to see what this announcement and price drop of the XR does to the deals my carrier is going to offer me next year when my contract expires. What other reason would it be for? You're talking maybe a saving of a few dollars on apples end it barley effects their BOM cost.

Well then clearly they're saving the cardboard, so less trees are cut down.

They're doing to save on plastic waste because you don't need 5 adapters and headphones you're never gonna use and only keep for if you want to sell the phone at some stage

Neat. I'm surprised that they are keeping the XR around for another year. Also really surprised that Apple is classifying the iPhone 12 mini as mini even though it has a 5.4" display which is roughly the size of my iPhone 8 Plus display....

That being said, I've got no reason to upgrade. The A11 Bionic is still years ahead in terms of the performance needed to do daily tasks. Maybe I'll upgrade in 3 years when my 8 Plus stops getting OS updates

Not worth $1299 though

Yeah, that's why the top selling iPhone models have been the mid range ones. Basically below $600 is the sweet spot for moving units. The iPhone XR is remaining in the lineup this year along with the iPhone SE. Given that the user experience is like 98% identical from the SE all the way up to the $1299 model, I don't expect that the iPhone 12 was supposed to be the model that knocks it out of the park in terms of sales.

Apple is currently going for an increase in marketshare and they are using their large scale and upfront R&D to lower the production cost of previous models and to continue printing fat stacks long after a model is no longer the latest and greatest.

When your lowest common denominator is the A12 Bionic, that really makes your competition look bad. Especially when you can beat/match them on price all while offering a device that's built better, lasts longer, and gives you a blue chat bubble.

For most people, the iPhone 11 series is still the one to get, especially now that it's gonna be cheaper. The iPhone 12 series seems like a giant waste of money.

Promotions can certainly impact that. If you're on Verizon, you get $440 for trading in an iPhone X towards an iPhone 12/Pro compared to $250 when trading in for an iPhone 11. Making the 12 and 11 virtually the same price when comparing both at a non-sale price.

I guess Apple expects everyone to have a mac, the lightning to type c is more wasteful than a charger, an extra charger is nice to have imo, keep the extra charger in another room or to have one in the car.

Keep in mind that Apple also expects to ship considerably fewer chargers as a result, and including those chargers was already adding waste (including limiting the number of iPhones Apple can ship at once). Don't get me wrong, this is as much a cost-cutting measure as it is an environmental move, but it should ultimately lead to less waste overall.

And yet, no 120hz screen. And they kind of killed the Pro models in my opinion. The only thing that made me go for an iPhone XS Max instead of the XR a couple years ago was the OLED screen. Now LCD are gone for good, so...

Apart from they won’t be selling many because A) no one actually buys the standard charger from Apple and B) most people already have multiple power adapters they never use

You don’t need an adapter for the car, if you plug your phone into the car you likely already have a wire in the car for that.

They’ve been shipping USBC power bricks since the X launched, most people have a 3rd party USBC adapter anyway.

Welp, as nice as the Pro Max is....looks like the vanilla non-Mini 12 is headed on my upgrade shortlist.

For no reason other than it being a competent smartphone for the price. Getting really bored and tired of Android right now, but will keep one as a secondary as there's stuff that Android does better for me.....just that iOS at this point does the essentials for me a fair bit better now.

The removal of an included charging brick reeks of cost-cutting to me, however. Though I guess it's not terribly surprising that Apple would rather ship no charger than to ship a slow-as-hell one (let alone a proper decently fast one), whilst still being able to use the environmental brownie marketing points.

Not in the US at least.

Sidenote: Okay for the 11 Pro they included it

but not everyone has an 11 pro and got a Type-C charger or a Lightning Cable.

So now more packaging and more shipping has to be done because now someone has to order/purchase a new wall plug

It's sad to see that 120hz didn't make it into the phones, but I was looking at next year for a move to something like an iPhone anyway. Gives them plenty of time to get rid of that notch and add the high refresh display. I'd say the highlight of the launch was the fact that the standard iPhone got a nice upgrade to what it should have this day in age; OLED displays.

The Mini looks ridiculously small. I can't imagine using something like that again.

No. Are they good? Of course, Apple has always had excellent cameras, especially for people that just point and shoot. That, however, does not mean the rest of the cameras are bad.

But they included a Lightning to USB-C cable! So you can plug it into the charging brick you already got!

...that has a USB-A port on it, meaning you can't actually use it. Oops.

It's not meant to be used as a charging cable, it's to connect to your laptop.

Generally iPhone 12 is an impressive device and I'm not going to nitpick about things. But I don't like two things. Lack of charger and inclusion of pointless USB-C to Lightning cable. Come on, only device in my entire household that even has USB-C port is my PC with USB-C port on the case. Everything else has USB-A. Laptops, PC, all the chargers, USB ports in all the cars. Removing charger under pretense of ecology is really shitty. Second thing that I don't like is this obsession with sticking magnets everywhere. And they are always those super strong ones. God forbid you have steel/iron particles around you coz they'll be grabbing on to your phone. Not to mention all these magnets are a nightmare if you're wearing mechanical watches because it fucks up the heart of the watch. I know it's expected everyone's going to use Apple Watch with it, but come on.

The cable isn't for charging, it's to connect it to your Macbook/laptop.

That’s the funny thing to me is that like more packaging and shipping needs to be made now  because not everyone has a type a lightning cable and not everyone has a type-c wall plug. So it’s like why not just include it in the box? Less packaging and if the customer doesn’t need it then how about have a free service to return that unneeded accessory

Eh, not quite. There's a huge number of people that already own iPhones, and those people will simply use what they already had. Conversions from Android to iOs are a much smaller number. So there's still a net reduction. Just like how I have a USB C cable that I use, and the past 3 phones I've had I haven't touched the headphones, charging cable, or charging brick for that matter.

Hell, I've only owned 2 Apple devices, and even I have 4 or 5 Apple wall warts.

What in the god damn fuck is this kind of arse marketing? If this was anywhere within the EU, Apple would be hung, drawn and quartered. And the base storage option is STILL 64GB.

I too like to overheat and kill my battery at twice the speed, all while using twice the amount of power required at half the charging speed.

Not really sure why you're surprised it's marketed like that, aside from perhaps the AT&T subsidy. I don't see any issue with any of it, aside from the 64GB of storage; that's awfully low.
