Is RAM incompatibility a big deal?

A friend of mine is thinking about renewing his PC. He intends to salvage his old G. Skill 2666 DDR4 modules, but he's having a hard time finding a B550 board compatible with that particular model. Does he really need to buy new modules, or will he be able to use the old ones albeit in an unoptimized state while he saves up to buy some?

Hard to say, sometimes they work and sometimws they don't. The only difference I could think is some special features wouldnt work on the board maybe.

The geek himself.

Motherboard manufacturers can't possibly test every module out there, the list they have is just what they have already tested.

FWIW, RAM compatibility will rely more on the IMC of the CPU than the motherboard. The motherboard is usually a limiting factor in how fast the RAM can go, the motherboard can't really help you if the CPU doesn't like the RAM.

I assume hes going to pair the b550 motherboard with a ryzen 3000 series chip

A 2666mhz kit should not be a problem with that combo

Was only a big problem on 1st generation of ryzen chips where the IMC often is the problem

Either a 3000 or a 5000, but I suppose the latter shouldn't be a problem either.
