What is this Windows Update? "Sound Research Corp. - Extension "

I'm being offered the following Windows update on my laptop:

I have never heard of Sound Research Corp - what is this?

 

(I've also been offered an update to the Bluetooth drivers which I intend to install FWIW, but I don't think that is anything to do with this)

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

I found that, but I didn't think I had this Synaptics High Definition Audio thing. I thought a had a bog standard Realtek soundcard...

It's possible to have both. Some laptops use Synaptics for USB C and HDMI audio.

I guess that Sound Research software works with Realtek as well. Here what I see on my HP ZBook G7 device manager.
