I think it was a week ago I mentioned this and got told it can't be done, even though it is for other things.

 

Seems common sense won out in the end.

Why wouldn't this be able to be done? I don't get that from people sometimes this is super common for a lot of things to be done this way.

But what stops someone from opening hundreds of accounts and entering the queue?

The majority of people last week in your thread told you this can and is done with many stores.

Personally I just mentioned it wasn't a dream solution for most stores since they are less aware of the stock of product out there, since there are middle-men inbetween from their perspective (Nvidia, AIB and vendors to be precise).

A store like EVGA is different compared to that story I told last week.

I've seen a lot of people getting orders in this way so it seems to be successful. I hope most of the orders placed this way are to real people.

probably works pretty well against the scalper bots because they don't wanna verify hundreds of EVGA emails to bulk order

Does it take in consideration time zones? Just imagine if you got the notification a few minutes after you went to bed. Some people do get 8 hours of sleep as crazy as that sounds.

its US only for now so they will probably tailor it to the US time zone and if you have nightshift or something just hope it doesnt go right as you go to bed i guess lol

This is fantastic they are actually trying to do something about bots already loved EVGA now I am definitely buying my card from them

Simple cross-referencing, same address? Same credit card? Void all but 1 order.

Well you see that's where you are wrong. If people can make easy money online there is really nothing to stop them. Study credit fraud and how it works. It's extremely easy and also insane how people skirt around security measures

I am a big fan of this! I'm not sure if I'll get an EVGA card (it's between that and the FE for me) but I have auto notify on, that way I have a good option!

This is awesome of EVGA to do something, it should stop most of the scalper bots. I'll definitely consider an EVGA card, I have heard their customer service is better than most AIB's as well.

The quality of EVGA's RMA refurb units can be suspect at times, but I've never had a single problem with their CS and getting stuff replaced if needed.

I didn't shoot down your idea entirely and never said it was a bad idea (it's a decent idea actually when properly implemented), I simply provided an insight as why to not all stores are doing this (which is what your question was, in that thread):

1. Let's say people have to pay to get a 'spot' in line, it probably goes against all consumer rights laws in the world to not allow them to cancel this pre-order. Even if that is not against laws, it's very consumer unfriendly.

Anyways, the issue with this comes down to taxes. Not sure about the situation everywhere, but where I live (and I think this is at least the case in the entire EU), sales tax is applied by the store on a product and then given to the government by said store (oversimplification, but you get the point).

So a store has to pay the sales tax over an order, while the customer can choose to cancel said order at any time. That's an administrative mess.

Having orders without them being paid brings you to the same issue as just listing cards as you get them; bots and such will just fill up all queue spots.

 

2. Keeping track over hundreds or thousands of outstanding orders is - without complicated systems - incredibly complicated and requires a lot of manhours.

It's 'easier' to just list cards online as you receive them. At least in the short term.

 

This is a situation stores partially don't want to be in.

The part where any card they list will get sold? Amazing.

The part where getting cards is impossible and all customers hound you about delivery times, their position in queue, etc.? Nightmare.

Of course I mentioned if a store doesn't have a complicated system in place already

I mentioned that, because in my previous post I had a point about how most stores buy from vendors and thus have less of a clear sight on the production process (and wouldn't necessarily know how many cards they can expect):

Don't see this post as "attack" towards you or "doubling down" on my previous post.

My posts in your previous threads were meant to be informative and constructive feedback towards the questions you asked (Why stores aren't doing it, not If they should do it)

The situation going on is anything but perfect, but unfortunately there are some issues with a pre-order system that won't make it the be-all and end-all solution to the situation.

(plus, for many stores implementing a proper pre-order system for ultimately a very very small selection of their products which suffers from high demand/low supply issue is going to be too expensive).

I queued up for the XC3 black 3080 this morning, now I'm going to just chill and wait. The fruitless struggle to find a 3080 these last couple weeks has totally drained me.

YUP, that's how I got my 3080 FTW3 Ultra, will be here this week.

Would of been nice to do this at launch, most people on the forums would have a card already. 
I lucked out online scoring 3 cards, 2 for friends and 1 for me but feel bad for all the people still trying to get a card ordered
