Went ultrawide, not completely happy

I'm in the process of upgrading my pc, as I'm stuck on an old ryzen 1600 and a rx 480 that I'm planning to change with the new ryzen's that are coming out and an rtx 3070.
 
So, while I'm waiting on the release of those products, I decided to look into a monitor upgrade.
My old panel was a TN 70hz cheapo 27 inch 1440p screen, that serve me well for over a year but was nothing fantastic.
 
I kept an eye on amazon warehouse deals for a good offer on an ultrawide monitor for months, and when the Asus VG35VQ surfaced for just 350€ in ''brand new'' conditions, I just pulled the trigger and bought it.
Keep in mind that my maximum budget was 400€, and this monitor retails for around 600-620€ here in europe.
 
Now, the panel itself is gorgeous. Colours are rich AF, blacks are reaaaaally good compared to my old screen, and the sheer size of it blowns me away.
What is kinda putting me off is the dreaded ''VA smearing'', whatever you want to call it. Basically, when the picture is in motion, you can see it being kind of blurred. If I'm not mistaken, this is a problem that is inevitable with VA panels, so I'm sort of stuck with it.
 
It also seems like that this smearing impacts the real ''high refresh rate'' experience you can have on these monitors.
 
The ELMB options that is supposed to work ''against it'' works, but introduces A LOT of ghosting. And I mean a lot, it's frankly unbearable. Is it supposed to be so bad? Motion clarity is enhanced, but the ghosting is there.
I'm asking myself if I should just return it and pick a more modest 16:9 27'' ips panel, or if I should try to get used to my new monitor.
 
Is there someone here who experienced a similar ''first impression''?

show some example of it, I ahve same or very close to it model and it works just fine, I dont really have anything to compare it to except of my cheap 32 4k VA monitor AOC. but seems on par with it nothign disturbing too much. I believe theres a few options in the menu that makes picture little bit worse instead of better on higher settings.

I personally think some VA panels are worse than others when it comes to this kind of thing.  VA panels will always be smeary its just a product of how VA panels work. There is no magic bullet settings for this stuff.  If it bugs you return it and get an IPS.  The ELMB is nothing more than ASUS's proprietary back light strobing.  Meaning it turns off the backlight between frames.  It happens so fast that all you really notice is a  visibly lower brightness output of the display overall.  My ancient ass BenQ has a similar option and it is also terrible and that is on a TN panel.   I have a fire hazard of a MSI monitor with a VA panel and it definitely has noticeable smearing too.  I stopped using that display because it got so hot near the power button that I burned my finger on the bottom of the display however and not because of the smearing, its bad but not THAT bad, but went back to my trusty old ass dell ultrasharp.  But I digress.  The ghosting you're experiencing with ELMB I would assume is probably due to Asus implementing panel overdrive when you enable ELMB and its causing overshoot artifacts.

 

IPS however is not without flaws as well.  I don't have any experience with newer IPS displays as my current IPS display is a Dell ultrasharp from 2015.  IPS panels tend to have "IPS Glow" and backlight bleed, but outside of a fully dark room and dark image they look fantastic, no matter what the crappy marketing teams plaster on the box though they will always be slower than a TN.  TN's have terrible viewing angles and sub par color accuracy. (maybe the newer ones are better at color accuracy I don't know.)

 

But personally I would pick IPS every time when faced with IPS vs VA.

 

Edit: TLDR: If it sucks and you aren't happy with it return it and get something else.  VA is always going to be smeary.  ELMB sucks and is backlight strobing bundled with aggressive pixel overdrive.

I went from a PG279Q to a MX34VQ and all I could look at was the smearing for the first week. Afterwards I don't notice it at all and the wonderful contrast ratio and the lack of colorshift/backlight bleed is what I appreciated. IPS is nice but I have never had a high end panel come without backlight bleed or colorshift. Which IMO defeats any purpose of the IPS in the first place. Sure it's color accurate but if you look at it from a slight angle the whites turn to a yellowish and so on. VA all the way until they make decent ultrawides with IPS/OLED/QLED/MicroLED.

IPS is nice but I have never had a high end panel come without backlight bleed or colorshift. Which IMO defeats any purpose of the IPS in the first place. Sure it's color accurate but if you look at it from a slight angle the whites turn to a yellowish and so on. VA all the way until they make decent ultrawides with IPS/OLED/QLED/MicroLED.

I decided to try to get used to it for a couple months, it is not like it's a deal breaker for me. Probably gonna keep it until I start working and I'm gonna get a really high end monitor for once
