Why do people insist on avoid chrome when they use Google services?

Hi All,

 

So I’ve been thinking, why do people insist on avoiding Google chrome when they use Google products, like search, gmail and YouTube.

I’ve been using Brave recently and its great, but lets face it, if you use a Google device like WiFi, Android, ChromeCast or whatever Google is still getting that data from you.

I’m just a little confused as to why people run away from Google but yet still use Android devices which are still tracking them, plus other things.

AFAIK, At one point it was because it was a memory hog.

The memory hog part I believe was because it was sandboxing, each tab starts a new process in windows at least.

You asked for a reason, and if that feeling stuck with people , regardless if it improved, theres a reason.

I have 3 gmail accounts, one for spam and signing up for stuff that I don’t check often, one for just YouTube that I never check and another for more serious stuff. But google doesn’t mine gmail for data anymore. For everything else I don’t use google services. Safari does a decent job of blocking trackers too.

 

Also WiFi isn’t a google device.

I wasn’t aware they had stopped mining gmail.

I don’t have a mac but I would assume at least compared to chrome at least Safari would be better at stopping trackers and stuff

Currently blocking 4 on this site, 1 Amazon, 2 google and 1 Rakuten. Blocked 17 on toms and 30 odd on google itself.

Worst thing for privacy is using EVERYTHING from one vendor that's data hoarding. Especially browser that basically knows everything you do in it. I don't use anything from Google except damn Youtube coz there literally isn't any alternative for it.

Because I don't like Chrome. Vivaldi has way too many good features I use extensively. 

 

I'm also limiting the amount of Google services I use so having different browser is still valid for that reason alone.

I "avoid" Chrome, only because Vivaldi is my browser of choice.

I actually like having easily accessible bookmarks that I can show and hide everything quickly and without hassle (Thus, the side panels are great).

I can't live without mouse gestures either, makes web browsing SO MUCH faster.

How the browser doesn't just kill/close itself the moment I close the last tab because I want to go back to the home page.

 

And many many more, without the use of extensions, including an actual adblocker.

Which people make too much fuss about. One half is whining because of Brave points thing even if you just use it as a browser and don't care about it and the other one is whining over affiliate links even though Brave openly announced partnership with that crypto service. So they used referral thing, it was literally Brave's own referral. While they could explicitly announce it, it was rather harmless imo.

I Honsetly for years have been using chrome and i dont have any issues beside my computer being slow but works better than Edge on my pc and all the compatibility on it with the google services i use like youtube,gmail,photos,Calendar,Contacts,drive and all of its complements and i generally dont use extensions execpt lastpass,honey and chrome remote desktop wich is a bit better of other stuff i tried and im happy with it and its my daily driver and as long i dont do anything sketchy on the internet im still using it for years.

Firefox has been my main for over 15 years. Jump from Firefox to some other main would be as big as if I were to jump from Windows to only Linux.

 

My reasons for not having Chrome even as secondary or third (2nd is Opera, 3rd is Edge),

• Memory hogging and other performance issues. When you have to close million popups after installing it, thats already turn-off
• No ability to select install folder. I think this might have been fixed since. It also didn't have 64-bit available when alternatives had.
• Default white theme.
• Apple/Google desing choices. I like industrial/simple/functional design. More round-sh is not for me.

There probably is more reasons, but as I only occasionally need to even install Chrome, I don't have time to find them. Only reason to install Chrome is to use Chromecast on laptop.

I don't think people particularly do that, chrome has the best features (not saying they're sufficient but overall most useful imo) and I see it being used a lot , although firefox too, which I'm personally just not used to and don't really like using it, their "add on shop" or what it's called seems to be particularly sketchy...

 

Also WiFi is not a google device

 

(I never use wifi btw, but I know that much lol)

 

 

PS: it also depends on the device I'm using... on PC I use pretty much exclusively chrome, on my phone I never use it, with very few exceptions, I use almost exclusively Samsung internet since many years on that (works on non Samsung devices too btw)

I only use Chrome when it's absolutely required for something or when I'm testing for responsive design and the such in popular browsers. 99% of my browser traffic is in Safari.

 

I don't even particularly care about them harvesting my data, I just dislike Google products as a whole. I pay for my email service and use Apple products, I guess I'm not really a great source of data outside of my Google searches and YouTube history.

Specifically for Android, it's very hackable. The only other default os is iOS and it's the same problem with privacy. With Android you can more or less strip it down to the necessities (ie minimal tracking). You could even install Linux. That's of course not possible with iOS even with jailbreaking (for clarity, you still need to root an Android to do the things mentioned). Ironically, I think Google devices have the least amount of tracking due to it being stock. As for Chrome, I use it mainly for YouTube, this forum, and any other services using logins on a consistent basis. For Gmail, it's free and I've used it all my life. If I could I would use protonmail and/or tutanote (iirc the name) if they were free with the ability for multiple addresses connected (the same way Gmail handles it in mobile). It'd also be a pain to switch all accounts to it. For Google's texting app, I like it. Not everyone uses signal, so it's the next best thing. For YouTube, there isn't an alternative afaik. I think those are the only service I use, so I'm doing ok

I just liked the look and feel of Edge prior to it being Chromium based (though I still use it today).

Chrome isn't 100% the best browser. I've been a Firefox user for years,. I know how it works. And switching to Chrome now would get on my nerves substantially more than the minor quarms I have with Firefox do. (Plus Chrome has its issues).

 

Basically: what I have now does the job, so why would I use anything else?

So you just use LTE for all internet activities on non-Ethernet devices?

Don't you find that to be too slow?
