AMD is confident there won't be availability issues with the RX 6000 series when it launches

Delicieuxz

AMD's Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions and marketing, Frank Azor, has no qualms with confidently asserting that AMD's launch of the "Big Navi" RX 6000 series graphics cards will be able to satisfy customer demand and not leave most would-be buyers upset and new-GPUless - as Nvidia's launch of the RTX 3000 series did.

AMD's Azor: No Ampere-Like Shortages for RX 6000

I hope they do it, and I wonder if that promise, along with the GPU filtering cap issue, will alleviate some of the back-order demand for the RTX 3000 series.

If they don't meet the boast, as Steve at GN says, people will remember. But if they do make it, then I'd guess it would be because they went a lot more heavy on pre-release production than Nvidia did.

Do they have a history of good supply at launch?

I just feel like companies these days taking artificial scarcity to the max.

We've only been given a date for the announcement, but we don't have a date for when people can buy. I'd argue they could still vary that if they see demand, and build up more stock to match if needed.

Bonus points if anyone can work out what the typical time gap is between previous AMD product announcements and when you can actually buy it. Let's see if this follows that pattern, or if it is longer.

By the time the new AMD graphics cards hit the shop. Everyone wants to upgrade their GPUs will have either 3080 or 3090 in their rigs already. :)

I don't recall about AMD GPUs other than Vega was very hard to come by, but that was in the mining boom so we can argue that a special case.

Their CPUs did have day 1 shortages but they stabilised quite quickly. For Zen 2 at least this applied to the 6-8 core models. I think the 12+ were struggling more.

its on 7nm so yields are high. assuming they can get enough dies I can't see why not. but they are going to have to tell AIBs very soon otherwise they can't make cards in time for an early November launch

I had the same thought, and I like AMD cards.  Still makes for a funny troll response to AMD, though.

I could see this maybe being the case if AMD started manufacturing months in advance, nvidia created artificial scarcity due to starting production in August.

Really wish AMDs group would just keep quiet until they have some numbers to show they can walk the walk. I love some teasing but AMD is all tease.

They have had a lot more time to prep stuff.  The problem is Nvidia can muster more ma hours per day than AMD’s GPU division can. Bit worried for drivers and how much they actually got under their coat when they finally draw steel.  Might be that scene from raiders of the lost arc but it also may not.

Always expect messy drivers with a new product regardless of the company, and potential hw failures with early models.   Just remember, the early adopters are the beta testers.

And that's a damn shame, that we just readily accept this as consumers. Maybe not buying them at launch is the only way they'll get the message. Either come ready, or don't come at all. I ain't trying to hear shit about being a "beta tester". 😒

Had a thought:  Just because WE don’t know doesn’t mean there aren’t people that do.  They just can’t say.

there was some smaller chinese company or other that leaked/released some 3090 pricing before the 3080s were even out and the prices were really high.  That company could be producing both AMD and Nvidia cards.  Were they?

haha true enough. If big navi comes out of the gate performing like a power starved 2070 super, AMD might as well stop trying to compete at the high end. They have the process node advantage, They have the efficiency advantage, they have the advantage when it comes to developers optimizing for GCN and RDNA2 on the consoles... If they mess their RDNA 2 launch up its going to add an even bigger stain to the Radeon branding for years.

Fingers crossed RDNA 2 is actually all its cracked up to be.

I'll believe it when it happens...
But they will either all be bought up by bots/scalpers or they will perform so badly they won't even be worth buying.... There's no way there won't be an availability issue, even if the cards are in production right now and they have time to rake up a lot of inventory for the next month.
