GameStop to start selling PC hardware

One look at their pre-built system lineup and I feel like they're going to have the same pitfalls as the Walmart OP desktops. Looks like they're spending too much money on clear side and front panels as well as RGB fans while compromising in other crucial items.

My word, I just looked at one of their prebuilt systems, and it's a massive ripoff.  I expected it to be bad, but this is worse than I could have imagined.

X570 motherboard (model not listed), Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB DDR4 3000MHz RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, 6TB HDD and a 2080 (not super), built in some unknown RGB case for $2799.99.  I decided to see how a similar build from us would fare.  I tallied it up in my head - factoring in our most expensive X570 motherboard, 3600MHz RAM (instead of 3000MHz) and even bumping up to the 2080 Super, together with a nice gaming keyboard/mouse - and I still only got around $1600.  For that much extra, you could replace the 2080 Super with a 3090 and it would still be hundreds of dollars cheaper.

Sweet, this means I can get a 1080Ti that's been used for 3 years for mining for $5 less than a new one that's still in box and somehow still selling at the original launch retail price.

Gamestop deserves to die.  Let it die.  It's no longer screaming with gusto, it's whining all the way to that spot behind the shed as its mutated carcass is shedding pounds of rotting flesh.

Perhaps.  That happens to businesses sometimes.  We don’t know how the new console market is going to play out yet, and it’s possible there is enough room for at least brick&mortar stores to convert to PC hardware shops.  That one is going to be an ugly fight though.  Something creative might occur.  A thought off the top of my head is GameStop getting together with Rossman or something and doing hardware sales/repair.  Could be a terrible idea.  I don’t know.  I suspect more than one GameStop outlet is going to go belly up though.

You're meaning to tell me they managed to do a worse job than Walmart with their OP Line of desktops? Damn, that's next level.

Considering the number of stores already shut down in the past couple of years, yes, I'm pretty sure the trend will continue.  Trusting GameStop to be knowledgeable about and sell you PC hardware is like trusting that a random pill seller on the Internet knows exactly what your body really needs.

If they don’t know enough about the products they sell and have developed a reputation for being untrustable basically the only thing they have is commercial space leases and some sort of national organization.  They’d have to rebuild everything and do it very fast.

I guess with Consoles heading to Digital only options, the next gen is likely going to be Digital only.

But really who didn't see that coming after the PS4 and Xbox One came out years ago it was obvious that was going to happen.

 

They are going with selling PC Hardware so they have something to sell, they won't have a business in 4 years time otherwise.

But talk about being last to the table.. what is going to set them apart from everyone else already doing this and in a nicer way?

 

A unique case or specialisted build that is themed internally and externally, something.

Putting some margin on parts and pushing them out the door everyone else is doing.

 

I guess we wait for gamestop's, Kodak moment..

Looks like it.  A couple of sub-$1,000 systems looked to be more reasonable (I didn't compare all of them), but their >$2,000 systems are just massively overpriced.

The cheap ones are worse.  They’re trying to sell a 2400g system for a grand.

Which is fine if its a custom open loop system or a modded case that looks awesome.

But putting together off the shelf parts into a box and marking it up like that.

Might depend on how many people simply don’t go on line or price anything but simply drop in at a GameStop and buy whatever. There will be a few.  I kinda doubt there will be enough.  GameStop kinda ran on the used book store model.  They even bought at 15% and sold at 50% which has been standard used book store margin since I have been a small child.  With that gone I don’t know what they have, if anything.

Well, I have some egg on my face.  Recalculated it at work, and it turns out we'd be closer in price than I originally estimated.  Of course, that's with some upgrades, but it's not as bad as I initially thought.  Still overpriced, just not as overpriced.

I am more baffled that gamestop is still afloat...Unless its a smaller shop for old school videogames/audio/technology equipment I cannot see a chain store dedicated to videogames...

Businesses can survive for an amazingly long time after they have become non-viable.  There are a bunch of whole business models that make money only one or two days a year (though they tend to make a lot during those periods) and stay open the whole rest of the year at a loss.
