Second hand 2080Ti vs new 3080

I'm at a crossroads.I'm not from the US so the 3080 doesn't cost 700$ here. It's more like 900EUR (once it arrives in stock ofc). I can buy a second hand Palit Dual OC 2080ti for 600EUR right now with a residual warranty of 2 years.

I know , I know "JUST" 300EUR less to not get the latest and greatest? Well the thing is where I live 300 EUR is a 1TB 970 Pro NVME drive. I'm running a 3700x with the stock cooler and I'm just thinking that if I get the 2080Ti I can get the noctua U12a get my PC running even quieter + 2X 1TB SATA SSDs. OR I can get a third monitor. OR... I can not spend the money at all..I  can continue on with the "ORs" forever. I'm running a 1440p monitor and I'm selling my 1080Ti so even though the 2080Ti won't be a big jump performancewise it will be in terms of technology. I'd be able to take advantage of RTX still and all the cool stuff the 3080 has without the noticeably bigger pricetag. So in conclusion:

Is the difference between the 3080 and the 2080Ti worth 300EUR (350USD) ?

Ampere is worse than Fermi, change my mind.

If you have a 1080 Ti I'd say yes, 2080 Ti vs 1080 Ti is too small a difference imo

@Hymenopus_Coronatus That's the  other thing. I'm even thinking about whether or not I SHOULD upgrade at all. I watched Steve's (gamer's nexus) video about people going crazy over 3080s and how it's simply consumerism at its best and I'm wondering if I'm falling down the trap of just wanting the latest and greatest thing without actually NEEDING the performance. I know I'm pretty much rambling at this point but  still I'd like to see more opinions in this discussion about what you guys would do in my position.

@Fasauceome I was just giving an example of what that money can buy you here. I do need storage but I already have a Kingston A2000 as an nvme drive so I don't think I'd be buying another one. More like 2x relatively good 1TB SATA SSDs. Right now I have ~1000GB of storage in total coming from 1xA2000 256 GB and 3xA400 drives at 240 each. Needless to say once you put a few AAA titles on there it gets pretty crammed.

i got a 2080 super for ~300 usd, but that took a few weeks of keeping an eye out for deals and it was part of a big bundle that i'll have to part and ship out. hoping i can trade it up for a 2080ti at a reasonable total price. wouldnt pay over 500 for a 2080ti (nor over 800 for a 3080) but i also dont care about waiting. if you want a card right now youll pay the price that goes with that. 350 bucks delta between the two cards seems right but they should be cheaper anyways so 🤷‍♂️

@VeganJoy OH no the price of the 3080 is not inflated because of resellers. That's the MSRP in my country. In the European Union things get taxed up out the wazoo so that's what happens and that combined with my currency trading badly into the Euro and we have a 900EUR MSRP.

@Lord Bloobus Honestly I don't know. I'm looking at benchmarks and if the 3070 is as good as the 2080Ti as promised I'm still dwelling on whether or not that's a big enough upgrade. I'm starting to think that it's either 3080 or nothing at all for me at this point.

It's not out yet so remains to be seen, but it's going to be a jump in performance either way, and there are also going to be super versions coming out it seems. It might be worth it to just hold onto your money a bit longer, save some more and see how RDNA shakes out and wait for 3070. At worst you just wait a bit longer on the upgrade, at best you find the card that is right for you personally.

I'm getting a 3080 since I'm planning to rebuild my entire PC around it a few months from now, right now I'm not buying because I can't find a founders and the AIB are having issues with QA, so I guess I'm waiting. I'd have more input for you but all I can say is you shouldn't buy a 2080ti when the newest gen is out and markedly better.

On paper, the 3070 is a good bit less powerful than the 2080 Ti:

image.png.978b5a74225756262ec4ca71cfd49e22.png

The CUDA cores may look like they're greater on the 3070, but the 30 series includes INT32 cores with the number now since they can serve the same purpose as FP32 cores now. It's 50% INT32 cores, and 50% FP32 cores, so 2944 of each for the 3070. 2080 Ti doesn't include the INT32 cores in the count, so if it were to be listed the same way the 3070 is it's 8704. Every other spec is lower, other than the 3070 being PCI-E gen 4 and the TDP being 40W lower.

(Tensor cores were improved with the new gen which is why count is so much lower, possibly RT cores as well but unsure)

A used 2080 Ti will probably cost $200-$250 more than a new 3070 however, and for gaming they should perform similarly for the most part. You do need to consider the fact that the 3070 will sell out instantly to bots and may not be available to buy for a few months, and also may have the same capacitor problem the 3080 and 3090 have right now where games crash due to lower quality caps.

A 3070 looks to have similar performance to a 2080ti, I wouldn't pay more than 400 euros for a 2080ti if I could get a new 3070 for 550 euros, of course you might have to wait a while to get one.

It depends on the game, but the 2080ti hovers around 30% faster than the 1080ti

The difference is, the FP32 cores in the 3070 also do INT32 instructions at the same performance. That means that in a pure integer workload, it has 5888 cores. The 2080TI does not have this functionality. (and CUDA core count is based on INT32, not FP32 core counts)

Pretty good assessment, and you get to see what AMD brings to the table as well. And wouldn't worry about the card too much, better to wait with the stability issues appearing on a large number of the cards that have been released.

Yeah that ain't happening where I live (Bulgaria) because 1BGN = 0.5EUR so the currency's shit basically then we add  20% VAT and customs duty and we have a final price of 1800BGN of the Palit 3080 Pro OC (which thankfully has 1 of the MLCC).The ASUS Strix which technically is not even out yet AFAIK is 2000BGN so 1000EUR. Unfortunate but that's how it is.
