Newegg shipping 3080s without boxes

spartaman64

Several hours ago, Reddit posts began apearing from very angry customers who ordered EVGA GeForce RTX 3080s from Newegg.com only to find the cards did not come in their retail packaging, and even worse, the cards were barely packaged properly in Newegg's boxes. With the RTX 3080 being a highly sought after graphics card, customers are angry that their purchases are arriving without full retail packaging, and in some cases the cards are even damaged.

wtf is newegg doing? EVGA must have sent it to them in a box right? So why are they taking them out of the box and shipping them.

You'd be surprised about what super ultra sought after items get returned soon after launch. Remember the ps4? Yeah got heaps back days later.

Isn't NewEgg a marketplace with 3rd party sellers?

Both.  They fulfill their own stuff and host a marketplace.

Skimming the source, it sounds like those GPUs were "OEM" ones intended for inclusion in a pre-built system. Hope they were sold as OEM cards not retail, as the warranty may be different (don't know how EVGA treats that). The bad packing is negligence on NewEgg's part.

Mmm, I'd imagine these cards are coming from 3rd parties then. Maybe they're scamming by pulling the cards and returning the boxes weighted and then selling the cards like this.

so scalpers can scalp the 3080 from newegg and then sell it for 2000 dollars on newegg. genius

Asus was selling their own 3080 on Amazon via the Asus Store earlier today for scalper prices. Was like $1799 CAD directly from ASUS. not a good sign at all.

Why would they ship them without retail packaging though... does Newegg offer assembly? That's the only reason I can think of as to why EVGA would do that for an online retailer. The only items I've seen shipped and sold that way are like mice and keyboards that are supposed to be supplied with new computers. Those of course don't come with retail packaging. It's just wrapped in bubble wrap for the most part.

I imagine the distinction between "bulk" or not means individually packaged in retail box vs just packed as one whole thing.

Newegg is a chinese owned company.  Wouldnt be surprised (as mentioned above) if their desktop prebuilt lineup (I cant remember which one on their website they own, like Rosewill is actually Newegg company) was forecasted, and then dismantled and sold as individual cards.

This is correct. Bulk cards are commonly sold to system integrators for use in prebuilt systems. No point in sending retail packaging when it’s just going to get thrown away well before the end user sees it.

I would imagine that Newegg was SUPPOSED to use them in their prebuilts but they dipped into their supply to fill demand with disastrous results...

Is there a chance that NewEgg is shipping without boxes to stop scalpers? It’s harder to resell something without the box and stuff.
