NAS direct connection to PC

Hi there,

I just bought a Synology NAS 1618+ with a pcie 10gbe ethernet card. This NAS will be my primary storage unit for all my files and clips (I am a videographer / editor). I don't need all the cloud features and stuff, I just wanted a massive storage solution. 

I wanted to connect it with an ethernet cable directly on my PC, which as a 10gbe port too, to optimize data transfer rate.

My issue is that the NAS is not recognized when only connected to my PC.

I saw some topics talking about IP issues and DHCP... Can you explain me step by step the process of fixing this?

Are you plugging the NAS NIC right into the NIC on your PC?

How is your PC connected to the rest of the network?

 

You may be able to just bridge the two connections in "Network Connections" to get it to work the way you want it to.

In which case you'll probably need a crossover cable.

So I have to bridge "Ethernet 01" which is connected to my network with "Ethernet 02" with is connected to the NAS? But then I loose the internet acces for my computer right?

Yes, and you will not lose* internet access.

 

However, after thinking about it a bit more, I think what will happen is that traffic will still be sent through your router even though the devices will be direct connected.

 

So a file requested from the NAS might go through this route:

 

NAS -> PC -> router -> PC.

 

I could be wrong though. Worth a shot.

You need to map those two ports on a separate network.

 

Then map the folders from the NAS to your desktop PC

If you connect the NAs directly to the PC you will have to set up some IP adresses, as both expect a IP to be given from DHCP server. ^{(thats not there).}

Gigabit (and beyond) Base-T Ethernet are all auto-negotiating regarding TX/RX; crossovers have been out-of-date for a while now.

This is what you need ^. Set the IP of the NAS manually, and the IP of the NIC on the PC manually (and assuming they're the same subnet*), then you'll be able to connect directly to it.

 

* Basically, as long as the IPs are only off by 1 in the right-most field, you'll be fine (192.168.7.2 & 192.168.7.3 would be good choices, for example).

Ok, and do I need to bridge the connection first or the change of IP will be enough?

And stupid question but... what is the best way to change an IP?

No need to bridge, just give both the nas a pc a ip in the same subnet.

 

Just change the ip in control panel under network adapter properties.
