RTX 3070; is 8gb of VRAM enough?

Currently my graphics card is a gtx 1060 and i use a 1440p monitor. I am planning to buy a 3070 when they release but ive noticed it only has 8gb of vram. I plan on keeping this card for around for the next 2 gpu generations (i will upgrade when rtx 5000 releases), so about 4 years more or less. Will 8gb last me 4 years playing at 1440p resolution? Im a bit nervous because when i first built my pc i dodged a bullet when i went to the shop and was planning to get a 1060 3gb when they had none left, so i settled for the 6gb. Looking back on that the 3gb model is basically unusable, should i wait for the 3070 with "16gb of vram" according to that one leak? Because if thats true that sounds expensive and it sounds like its quite far away. My 1060 is really starting to get slow and i want an upgrade sooner rather than later. Any suggestions?

we don't and can't know, but at least today with the current titles, 8 gigs is enough.

i mean you could wait and check if nvidia is going to release refreshed versions for current ampere cards.

I'm not sure why so many people are crazy over VRAM these days. 4 years ago we had mainstream cards with 2 gigs and it was fine. Games and applications aren't dumb either. It's not like if you fill your VRAM in a game your PC instantly blue screens. Most games are like GTA V too and just cache assets or reserve blocks in memory for faster use but it doesn't necessarily mean it's using 11gigs at 1440p. Seeing the super cards Nvidia released and how the 3090 isn't the full card technically I wouldn't doubt a refresh in 6 months time

I was going to get the 970 or 980 back in the day, everyone said 4GB of VRAM was more than enough for 1080p

I decided to go with the 980TI once it released as it was faster than 2 980's in SLI and had 6GB's of VRAM.

 

Fast forward, nowadays 6GB's isn't enough, it still works for 1080p but barely.

8GB's has become the new standard, I very much doubt it'll be that way in 2-3 years, we can't know for sure, but I'm not going to risk it.

 

I'm not sure about the "rumors" of 16GB versions, but as I don't know if or when these are coming out, I decided to get the 3080 over the 3070.

We don't have benchmarks for the 3070 yet, but at this point I'd rather get a 2080TI second hand for the 11GB's of VRAM over a 3070.

 

So If you got the money I'd recommend to get the 3080 instead, or a second hand 2080TI if you can snag one at 500$

Testing a 4GB 1650S on my backup machine with appropriate settings it isn't all that bad for the 1440p monitor connected.

Sure, it isn't bad, however once people start spending over 500$ they tend to want to max settings and push beyond 60FPS

I play several titles where I simply push my VRAM above the limit and I have to turn down texture settings.

 

Sure you can say the 3070 will be fine and at worst you have to turn down settings in 2 years for now, but is that a compromose anyone wants to make after spending 500€ on a card?

I sure wasn't, which made spending an extra 200€ an easy choice (if you have the money)

 If you believe you will upgrade again in 2-3 years It may be acceptable each persons situation would be different.

Short answer is Yes. The long answer is of course it is. For a Gaming PC? Over 8GB for merely 1080p resolution is well out right silly. Or for matter even 1440p/1600p.

 

For 8K and Professional Content Creation this does make Sense to do.

True, if you accept that you need to upgrade in 2-3 years, however OP wants the card to last for at least 4 years.

 

Pretty similar to the situation I was in 5 years ago, I'm not one to spend 500-700€ on a product I'm getting rid of 2 years later

Personally, given the VRAM for the upcoming consoles are going to higher than 8 gb I think you should lean towards more VRAM than 8 gb if future proofing is the goal.

I'd wait to see Nvidia's 20GB/16GB response to Big Navi and stay away until they sort out the POSTCAP issues.

I am upgrading my 1080 to a 3070 and I plan on using it till the 5000 series too.   Right now I have a 1440p monitor and I am getting a Reverb G2.   I think the 3070 with 8 gigs will be just fine till I need to upgrade my whole PC and get a new GPU.

8GB is fine for anything less than 8k native. (and even there, there are only 2 games that have been tested that exceed 8GB actually used)

The consoles are using the GDDR6 as shared system memory, not exclusively as dedicated VRAM. It's highly unlikely it will do anything but a straight up 8/8 split of the memory, but it should be capable of dynamically adjusting the split as needed. (like a 6/12 when a game needs 12GB for the system, but not so much for the GPU)
