AMD Releases RDNA 2 Cooler Designs

yolosnail

Sorta-update:

Jay of JayzTwoCents has shown a photograph in his latest video of the 'actual' card that he was sent by a 'source'. I kind of agree that it would have looked so much better without the red trim

Summary

Not sure if this really counts as 'news' but AMD Radeon has just released a photograph on Twitter of the new RX 6000 series cooler design, you can supposedly view it on Fortnite, but I'm not a 9 year old so I'll just take their word on that

Take a first look at the design of the new Radeon RX 6000 series. Our upcoming @AMD  #RDNA2 graphics cards will feature a brand new cooler design, and you can study every angle yourself on our Fortnite Creative Island. 8651-9841-1639.

My thoughts

No doubt this is in order to take some attention away from the upcoming RTX 3000 launch since they have nothing to show for another few weeks yet.

I must say, I do like the design, although still looks a bit too 'gamery' for me. I wish they'd kept the aesthetic of the Vega VII design, but logically it has to be infinitely better than the blower design they've used in the past.

It's fine I guess if you're into the whole gAmErY look, I just personally think the logo on the fans looks tacky, but it's not a big deal.

THANK GOD it's not another blower style hair dryer abomination. If this isn't just for show and it actually performs well, then the reference cards would actually be a good choice for once, considering AMD tends to have quite good components on their reference PCBs.

Well, if you go off the render above, it doesn't look like there are cutouts this time (thank god). Time to see if it actually ends up existing or it turns into a 5600XT reference card that, y'know, never ended up being a thing.

If they've managed to reduce the noise to a minimum while providing adequate cooling, it might be good...

Oh who am I kidding, reference coolers and pretty much always garbage compared to most custom coolers from their board partners.

As for the R on the fans... Lets be honest, it ain't going to be seen while it's spinning, anyway. Nothing to complain about here. Even more so in a normal position with the fans facing down.

None whatsoever.

So I will wait until it's in the hands of reviewers I trust to go off of anything lol.

To be honest, after looking at endless flood of over the top mangled and RGB ridden flashy RTX 3000 series designs, this one actually doesn't look bad at all. I just wish they wouldn't put silly RADEON text where the air is suppose to exhaust on the sides... Same dumb "form over function" as on "Founders Editions" of RTX 2080 series.

At least it looks like it has significantly better chances of decent cooling than their past designs.

I hope the fans don't turn out to be tiny so that they fit into a more manageable sized card. I'm sure someone could figure it out based on the size of the power connectors, but I don't care that much. Speaking of power connectors, they're by far what I find most interesting. Dual 8 pin. More meaty than what they had on the 5700XT.

Mostly the red accents, hopefully they're just LEDs and can be turned off but if not - fitting it into the colour scheme of existing builds might be a challenge, since the whole red and black gamer look has sort of gone out of fashion over the years. But red and black has been the signature colour scheme for Radeon anyway, so I can't really hold that against them.

I'd also say the fans, but to be fair those won't be visible in most cases.

I would take the design of the Radeon VII or RTX 3000 FE coolers any day of the week over it, but then again, it's a matter of personal preference. Even if I'm not drooling over it, I think it's decently tasteful. I'm interested in its cooling performance though, more than anything.

To be fair, there are several aftermarket 5700XTs out there with dual 8-pins.

We're probably looking at the typical 295W TDP like on the previous high-end, power hungry Vega GPUs, or they're trying to pull a one-up over Nvidia over whose cards will work best in the winter, and they end up cranking the power limit to the 375W dual 8-pins will provide (along with the PCIe slot).

Why do i get the idea its the size of a 360 radiator, really hope its not gonna be that big with a waterblock or i would have to remove my reservoir just to fit this thing inside my lian li case

Looks at the relative size of the fans to the two 8-pin connectors. Someone else can work it out more exactly, but to my eyeballs I think that puts the fans around 80mm, 92mm at most. So the card length would be in the ball park of 240-280mm.

I find it interesting it looks more like an AIB triple fan design for cooling. But where does the air leave the cooler? On the visible edge there's some space lost due to the power connectors and the Radeon logo, which would particularly hinder the middle fan. If there's more space on the other side, it'll heat up the mobo and more likely get trapped. The ends?... Unless... AMD also went for a through-card cooling design to some extent?

Still, with two 8-pin power connectors it'll be in the same power class as nvidia's own offerings.

Sapphire does all of AMD's reference cards and from what info we have, AMD has told them to go ham on this one. So if it actually exists, I'm expecting something decent.

i think the design is pretty clean, i would move the radeon logo down slightly, to allow more air, and make the third fan blow through (so shorter pcb), but for a reference design is good, from the design on fortnite it matches 100% with the leaked pcb on videocardz.com, which pointed towards a 256bit bus card.

after careful look they are using the same memory layout as the reference 5700xt but rotated 90 degrees, so 3 memory chips on top 3 on bottom 2 left, instead of 3 left 3 right 2 top.

this is the first time this close to launch that i dont have a good idea of its specs, 80cus with 256 bit bus makes no sense, but everything points to it
