NO!

Do not. If there is no hardware between them you will break both USB ports (or worse)!

The fastest way would be using the network. If both devices are on the internet they already on a network. Just have to figure out howto access the files.

Just like @BlueChinchillaEatingDorito said. ;)

You definitely will fry both devices if you just plug that cable.

As everyone suggests, ethernet to ethernet will do the job just fine. Most devices will have Gigabit port nowadays, which as fast as USB 3.0 transfer anyway.

This tutorial will do the job nicely. Just don't forget to reset your network settings to auto again.

You won't even need a router or switch. Just straight from the PC to the laptop. I did this all the time.

Humor me, as you should do.

NO you can have direct connection as well. One Ethernet from one PC to the other. You don't need a router or switch for just 2 PCs

It would not go to the internet, just your local network inside the house, the data would no leave the house. ;)

This will also work.
And every Ethernet device made after 2005 does not need a special (crossed) cable. So the normal ethernet cables will work as well.

Your home network speeds is not determined by the internet speeds from your ISP. Since it's local traffic, it is mainly determined by the cables you use and the maximum speed of the ethernet ports on your computer and router/switches. Now if you're using WiFi, it might be slowed down a bit but it still would not be as low as your ISP speeds of 6mbps.

As other people said, internet speed won't matter at all. You're transferring files locally on your local area network. If you already using a router/switch, just connect both your devices (preferably wired) and just share the folder you want to copy.

Same procedure as the link I post, but skip all of the network settings if you already connected onto a wired network already.

Agree with this. The difference's so much on N networks.
