LG Wing Officially announced

LG has just officially announced their latest phone which has a different form factor as compared to the typical "glass sandwich" design.

It comes with a swiveling POLED screen which is designed to increase functionality.

 

I definitely think this is a possible alternative to folding phones for those who want a secondary screen but don't want the fragile folding component.

I honestly want to see how creative people will be able to use this device and it's very unique form factor.

If display slided out at the bottom, similar to how Xiaomi made that Mi Mix sliding phone, maybe. This swivel thing is just so absurd I don't know who are those 5 people who are going to want and use this...

The issue I think is will there turn out to be a killer use for this?  I vaguely remember seeing someone using it as a map thing and people being fairly pleased. I’m not sure that if it even works as well as was shown in the ad (always a doubtful thing) that this feature alone would be enough. The big thing I see is picture on the main swiveling screen and controls on the smaller screen.  That requires specific programming though which may not happen.  This could be a solution in search of a problem.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

At this point I wonder whether LG actually wants to sell any phones.

 

I get it, the standard rectangle smartphone is really boring, but this is not the future. Neither are folding phones.

Go back to the LG G5 and "ThinQ" about how you can improve on that, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.

Actually I would expect the battery life to be pretty decent, even considering the second screen.

It has the same battery size as a Samsung S20, while the LG Wing's main screen has a smaller resolution and a lower end CPU (than a US-based Samsung S20).

 

So that was kind of my reasoning; on paper it has a chance to have pretty good battery life, so it depends on how much the second screen uses in terms of battery power.

It's an interesting concept but I just don't see it taking off at all. They're basically hoping that devs adapt their programs to work with it; fat chance. There will be the few programs that LG pays to change their software, but other than that I don't see devs putting in the work when there will be a very small number of these in the wild. The battery is also going to be an issue. You have what, almost 11" of total screen space, and you're going to try and run that off of a 4,000mah battery? Please LG. I've also had phones that use sliding mechanisms before, and they always loosen and fail over time. Not to mention the scratch factor; get some dirt on the back of that second display and you're other display is going to get quite the lashing. 

 

I will give them some credit; the device is a lot thinner than I thought it'd be.

Might be an interesting pick up for some people, when it gets massive price reductions after sitting on the shelf for a while.

It's important to stress this is an experimental phone. I don't think LG expects this to sell in large numbers, or to nail everything right away. The issue, of course, is whether or not there will be enough interest to merit a second-generation Wing with improvements. I suspect the answer is "no" regardless of how well LG nails the execution the first time around.

LG really isn't in a position where they should be making experimental devices. They're not Samsung, they don't have the revenue stream where they can make "throw against the wall and see if it sticks" devices. They should have invested that money into marketing instead.

Am I the only one here that actually likes the design? Assuming the sliding screen isn't heavy enough to make it feel top heavy, I think this is brilliant.

 

I can think of 3 things that people spend majority of their time in which this massively benefits over traditional design

-Watching videos (top video, bottom whatever)

-Playing games (top game, bottom gamepad)

-Text editing (top text, bottom keyboard)

 

And this is far less clunky than a dual screen design. If LG can get the software side of things done well, I honestly might get this

Nope - I like it. 

 

I can see a strong use case for reviewing and editing excel/word documents where the portrait keyboard is significantly easier to type on but you need to landscape mode for sensible viewing.

I don't think this is a practical design or a good phone, but you have to admit that it is pretty damn interesting and innovative.

Time will tell.  There’s a killer use for it or there isn’t.  Rotation should be sturdier than slide as a general rule.  That sort of thing is very engineering dependent though.  I suspect sand is going to be a factor. People take phones to the beach. If the design doesn’t clear debris well it’s going to be a fatal problem. 

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
