How far would you drive for a used PC component?

Really depends on the deal I'm getting. If it's a crazy good price I'd be willing to go up to an hour (or maybe 2 in an extreme case), but for the typical used market value, probably no more than 30 minutes. Both because it's just not worth it to drive that long for a used part when I prefer to buy new anyway, and because my car gets like 16mpg so I've gotta factor that into the price XD

It's hard to quantify because for me it really depends on what the item is, how much I want it, value of the deal. Not specifically PC related but Ill drive a day or two or longer for a car same would go for PC components depending on what it is.

The farthest I've ever gone was 2 hours from my house. It was for a an unopened 1080ti FTW3 a guy was selling for $600, a month after they came out. Other than that I mainly just stick with my area where you won't be driving more than 30 minutes to get to any part of town. However when I travel I do look at the local listings while I'm in that place, I'm going out of state for a few days this weekend and I've already been scoping out the used market where I'm going.

damn right in the middle of the mining craze eh? or was that immediately after, cant remember lol

 

id spend an hour or two for a similar deal, a 2080ti for 400-450 bucks would be enough to get me on the road. i prefer things shipped though, paypal protection is nice and its less work lmao

I wouldn't drive far for an overpriced GT 1030.

well I live in a place where there is just rural farm land so a lot of tech illiterate but most computers are in town or a town 45 min outside

Less than 30 minutes of travel. Be it on foot, by car or with public transport.

More than that, and I'd rather just buy it online and have it shipped.

 

Now if it was the deal of the century, like @svmlegacy said, a free RTX 3090... I'd drive up to 12 hours one way.

It'd still be cheaper than buying the damn card and well worth the entire day of driving to and from.

Pretty much, I got it right when it started. It's MSRP was $749.99 and it was going for $850 or more on Amazon and all over online. It went up from there too, the guy I got it from had bought it for MSRP from Bestbuy using a preorder I think. He got the card and ended up not building the computer he was going to put it into so he didn't need it. He threw it up on Craigslist for $700 I told him where I was and said I'd drive the two hours straight there to get it if he'd take $600 for it. He said yes. He was an older guy and I don't think he knew about the mining craze hiking up the prices because he was surprised I didn't try to haggle him more and that I bought it so quickly. He said the ad was only up for 3 minutes before I messaged him.

Wear and tear on my car/tires/fuel/time vs savings.  Simple equation - am I saving enough money buying used and driving to it (I value all of my time vs making $$) or not.  If yes, drive, if no - new.

How can a PC component be "rare"? I'm thinking of Pokemon cards and some of their exclusivity, but I don't think a GPU or mobo can be rare.

I would happily take a couple of hours out of a day for a good deal. Any more than an hour there and an hour back is too much.

It all depends on how good a deal. The better the deal the longer the drive  would make.

The Asrock Aqua motherboard. Only around 300 were made those are becoming rare.

Not rarity of a product itself but rarity of the offer. For example. you won't find many people selling Vega 56 for 120 dollars.

I'm in an area with heavy traffic so going for 1 hour can be like 15-20 miles or 80, yay

Depends.  If I have to spend more on gas/meal than I am saving on the part, then it is not worth it.  If I was going to travel I would want to see the part working before traveling.
