Minecraft using 13.5 GB of RAM?

rx590overclocker
Go to solution Solved by Nayr438,

Yes. This is my Minecraft with just optifine maxed out and no limits sitting at 23GB of memory usage. It's high memory usage is just part of it being built on Java and storing as much into memory as it can.

Screenshot_20200910_072056.thumb.png.ff6407ee7e2ba12c4f5ee5de039d099e.png

I am playing java minecraft and it is using up 13 GB of ram, and as much as 15 at times.  I am using 256x texture packs, and really fancy shaders, as well as 11 fabric mods.  Is this normal?  the screenshot I am posting is in task manager while the game was paused, while in game radeon overlay says i am using 13.5.  I will also post a picture just to give you an idea for the intense quality of my shaders.

Im not sure completely, but mc's performance is heavily dependent on the allocated ram. Some clients even allow you to change the allocated ram to whichever amount you need. So i figure that this number is not very bad considering the intensity of your shaders etc.

I have allocated it 12 gb of RAM, but that doesn't mean it has to use it all does it?

Yes, that is normal for MC and what you list.

Edit:  If you are having issues, drop to a x128 texture pack.  x256 is a waste, since it's hard to tell the difference between the two and performance is very different.  That is if they offer a x128 pack of course.

the most interesting thing is that it only uses around 30% of my rx 590, but all of my RAM.  From my experience and reading about others, it seems like Minecraft doesnt use much cpu or gpu, but it will devour your RAM.  I would think it would use more of my GPU for the shaders tho, but it doesn't.

Correct, it's how the code was written.  It's a very poorly optimized game and the code itself is almost childish.

A very very wealthy child wrote it, but it is what it is.  Fun game, utter crap for a program.

Just poor optimization and running on OpenGL. If they would have used a decent API the game would run much better. But they're well past the point where they can redesign the game in a new API. Minecraft loves RAM. The higher your texture pack resolutions and the more mods you use, the more RAM it will take. You can set it to use less RAM, but that'll probably cause performance issues.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Yes. This is my Minecraft with just optifine maxed out and no limits sitting at 23GB of memory usage. It's high memory usage is just part of it being built on Java and storing as much into memory as it can.

Yeah the look as good as it gets for minecraft, but i find it funny that you use a high-resolution texture pack that tries to resemble the vanilla 16x16 look. :D Might aswell stay with vanilla textures and keep the extra performance.

WOW!  I thought mine was bad.. I am using fabric mod manager and API, i am using optifabric, so i have optifine with it.  I am also using sildur shaders and a 256 texture pack.  I also have ambient sound, and sound reverb

yes a lot of people find it odd.  I just found many of the ultra realistic packs are too good imo.  I know that sounds odd, but everything is still cubes, the packs that try to make it look real just make it wacky.  I hope yall understand what I mean.

Yes, use the default textures if you have RAM concerns and want things to look... basic.  I guess I don't understand why you went with a x256 pack to look exactly the same as the base game?

I love bdcraft textures.  x128 are light loads on my machine, and give me a cartoony look with one pack or I use the Vanilla BD pack for sorta default.
