Wifi speed limited to 7mbps... randomly, please help me :(

krizalm97

Hello there

I've had this issue since a couple of weeks, the wifi connection gets limited to 7 mbps but in a randomly behaviour and here's an example

the absence of activity in the middle is because I suspended the laptop for a moment, the problem can be solved by turning the wifi off and on as well

I have reinstalled the driver, downloaded an antivirus and ran a virus scan and everything went fine, unlink my university account that changed some settings on the system, and the problem is still there more and more frequent

so, any solution?

my laptop: HP 15-bw014la with AMD A9 9420, running Windows 10 Home single language 1909 (18363.1082)

If you have access to your router you might change what Wireless channel you're using. Unfortunately your WiFi card is only single band. 2.4 Ghz is used for a lot of things besides WiFi. Any other 2.4 Ghz device can interfere. My guess is you have interference OR too many devices are on your router. Interference can be solved sometimes by changing your wireless channel as maybe you can find one that no one is using or that not many devices are on.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

@Donut417

thanks for answering

omg, I just checked the internet speed on my phone and the same thing is happening as on the laptop 😮 it didn't do that until now.. or maybe it did it but I did not notice that hehee

channels are fine apparently, so I guess I'm going to restore the router 🤔

and in fact the socket where the router is plugged in just showed a voltage drop due to bad contact, i noticed on my tv it was flickering for a few milliseconds, they both share the socket so I'm going to fix it, maybe that's why the connection speed is changing...

this was the highest speed and yes this is the actual connection speed the laptop shows it on a different scale, I don't know why..

this is my current speed connection

I explained some details in the last answer...

  1. What speeds are you paying for from your ISP?
  2. Is there any other device between the computer and the ISP device?
  3. Can you connect to the ISP device directly using ethernet and check to see if you have more consistent speeds?
  4. That channel rating report is useless without the channel graph. Please post the latter as well. Also, if your WiFi adapter can also connect to 5GHz, post the output.
  5. How far are you from the wireless source? Any intervening walls or floors?

That channel rating system is seriously flawed actually as its not taking into account overlapping channels.

For example if you are on channel 1 I would expect performance issues due to whatever is on channel 2 and 3.  Same problem on channel 11.  Channel 6 looks cleanest, but even then you can't see what is actually in use, or crosstalk from none-WiFi devices.

For the record, you absolutely should NOT be on channel 4, only 1, 6 or 11.

@Falcon1986

well..

1. we are paying for 20mb 😅

2. you mean the devices connected to the router? 4 smartphones, my laptop, and a smart TV connected via ethernet

3. the ethernet connection works perfectly but I use my laptop in my room and I don't have a long enough cable, which I would like to have by the way

4. the only device at home with 5GHz is smart tv, my laptop and phones are only 2.4GHz

5. there is only one wall between my laptop and the router and the distance is around 7 meters, it always shows a very good signal

here's the graph, this is how it works in my room right now, @Alex Atkin UK (thank you for answering as well)

I experienced this recently!

now I'm always looking at wifi speed on my phone so this afternoon it started showing that 7mb limit and the laptop was working fine at the time, a few minutes later the laptop showed the limited speed too 😐

The 2.4GHz frequency is too congested where you live, and your channel analysis already shows that there is a lot of overlap with other WiFi networks. The random speed degradation is expected especially around peak usage times.

The only way to fix this problem is to start utilizing 5GHz whenever possible. The 5GHz spectrum can accommodate a lot more channels so that signals don't have to overlap. The downside is that wireless range might suffer, but if you're relatively close then it shouldn't be a problem.

If your wireless router already has a dedicated 5GHz antenna, then a possible solution for your laptop is to upgrade its wireless adapter (WiFi 5 or better). Unfortunately, you can't do this for smart phones.

Man what a mess, those SSIDs on 4, 7 and 9 should not be there and are messing up the whole spectrum efficiency. :(  You're pretty much stuffed in this scenario.
