Need a new PSU (RTX 3080)

Elverias

Hello there,

i'm planning to buy the RTX 3080 and i guess i need to upgrade my PSU. To be future proof and based on current gen of CPU's, i decided to buy a 850W PSU. But of what i've read so far, this might a bit overkill already? Most i've read is 650W is ok and 750W is totally fine. Seems like i'm in a bad position with my 550W. What do you think? I wanted to spent around 150€~, maybe 20-30€ more if it's really worth it.

Current rig:

Corsair Graphite 780T
Mainboard: ASUS PRIME Z370-A
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
GPU: KFA2 GeForce GTX 1080 EX OC
RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3600MHz
PSU: Seasonic Focus Plus 550W, 80+Gold, Modular
5 Case-Fans
2x HDD
1x SSD
1x m.2 nvme SSD

Plan/budget for an 850W unit & wait for reviews for better draw requirements... if 750W is a better value alternative, then you'll have saved a few €.

I frequently edit any posts you may quote; please check for anything I 'may' have added.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

750W is fine as long as it's a good unit.

If you plan on keeping it for awhile through a number of upgrades and or builds there is nothing wrong with going with an 850W PSU.

There really is no overkill unless it's not reasonable such as getting a 1600W PSU for a 200W system as an example.

As long as it's reasonable it's fine.

Nothing wrong with planning ahead.

That's fine...

I would also look at others however like the Corsair HX 850, RMX 850 etc when you are ready to buy.

Would be quieter.. :)

Thank you guys.  So i can keep going with my plan and just pick a PSU from the tier list?

For example, i already picked some possible units, every is a 850W one:

Corsair: RM 117€, RMX 140€, RMi 168€, HXi 179€

Since i've already a Seasonic, ofc i looked just for one with a bit more power. I've found the Seasonic FOCUS GX-850 (116€) but i have read some bad things about the Focus Gold series. Just to mention it: the 750W are just around 10€ cheaper; the RMi and the HXi are 15-18€ cheaper .. Which isn't worth it imo.

If the listed corsair are fine, which one would be the best? I know the "i" have the corsair link feature, which i don't know and probably don't need? Is the RM the budget and the RMX the best value option? And why should i get a RMi instead of the HXi which cost just 10€ more but has a better classification?

The RM is the newest and I am guessing the more budget option.. Don't know all that much about that one.

The RMX is just all around EXCELLENT.

The HX is Multi Rail.

If you feel you don't need the link feature then just don't get the (i).

The only thing I really see wrong with the new Focus is they are noisy with that 120mm fan compared to the RMX and HX with the 135mm fans that are also PWM.

So in order from least to best of what we are talking about would be RM, RMX and HX.

I have the HX 850W is my system currently.
