Is the 8gb of vram from the 3070 really going to age well?

I'm considering buying a 3070 with a 1440p 144hz monitor, but I'm wondering is this really a good decision? I would want this card for another ~4 years and it's hard to imagine games in the next few years are going to stay under 8gb vram at 1440p

You should might be fine but 4 years is kinda stretching it if you want to future proof id go higher

For 1440p 144hz, i would do a 3080.  It has the 10gb of vram.

True, but I saw a leak that mentioned that the "3070 ti/super" will have 16gb of vram, a lot to consider because it will probably be pricier. But maybe 3080 is better

GDDR6 or 6X hasn't gotten any cheaper so even if that rumor was true you would be paying a lot of money for a card like that, should be even more than a 3080.

Four years is a long time in the GPU world. If you hope to game on a 144 Hz 1440p monitor for the next four years then you should spend as much as you can now. If you could stretch your budget to a 3080 then this will give you a better experience for longer (for a higher price of course).

8GB matches the card's performance well enough. I'm pretty sure my 1070 comes with 8GB memory only because it needs this many GDDR5 chips to get a wide enough memory bus for sufficient bandwidth

Ok, so the Nvidia RAM is not directly comparable to AMD due to Nvidia using a compression algorithm for info stored in VRAM. That's part of how they got their 1060 6GB card to have similar VRAM percentage use as the RX 580 with 8GB. If you want a more realistic RAM comparison between cards, add ~20% to Nvidia's RAM amount to compare to AMD equivalents.

 

As for 8GB being "enough", that depends on the game, your system, and the settings you use. Some games are really poorly optimized with any settings higher than consoles would use, others are very well optimized with all settings. So far, with my 5700XT, I have only run across a couple games that actually hit a physical limitation because of the 8GB, and that was exclusively due to the poor optimization of a set of extreme resolution shadow maps. These same games reserve all 11GB of VRAM on a 2080TI, so to some people, it looks like it needs it, but it really doesn't.

 

As long as you don't intend to do games that use tens of thousands of different 8k textures in a scene, you should be fine with 8GB. 10GB should allow for full 8k textures in almost all current games just fine, and most upcoming titles provided you're using raytracing. (raytracing removes the need for shadow/lighting maps, reducing the VRAM requirements significantly)
