Then you wait until it is in stock, or buy something else.

Completely depends on the circumstances. For example, if your cpu doesn’t have an integrated gpu or you don’t have a spare, your computer is unusable. If you do have another gpu or an integrated one, you run on limited performance until you can find a 3000 series card.

If you don't have a integrated GPU then pick up something cheap as a backup until the RTX 3000 cards are back in stock.

You should never sell your GPU till you have your new gpu unless you have another gpu lying around as a replacement while you wait. Im sure you will be able to find stock  at atleast one store. If you want the card if preorder it  to make sure

What happens if the benchmarks show that the difference is t as big, or isn't even there, lots of people splashing out on something that may not be what it is.

 

Can't wait till benchmarks start coming out.

What a ridiculous question - just accept that you will take a loss on your 20 series card and move on.

It makes me laugh when people treat computer parts as an investment - today’s 1000 dollar GPU is tomorrow’s entry level card available for 300 dollars. 
The sooner all these 20 series owners just accept the fact and suck it up the better.

It took about a month on auto notify for me to get my first 2080 ti and if I got the one I wanted I would have had to wait longer. The GTX 1080 ti took a lot longer.

That and the chance of an RMA stops me from selling last gen cards.

Right? I hope what Nvidia said are true but I won't sell my old cards for something that is still uncertain, and this goes for any company. Hopefully, OP haven't sold his/her GPU and only asked this to consider this particular scenario should he decide to sell it.

Yes u 'may' loose out on the sale price, but atm the market is getting flooded with 20 series cards anyway so u may end up listing ur card and not selling it due to other people undercutting u.

of couse i dont own or sold any of these, just a real life eg people dumping all rtx 2000 on ebay right now
